The Interlopers is a story by Saki based around the feud and friendship of Georg Znaeym and Ulrich von Gradwitz. The definition of "interloper" is someone who is unwanted, a trespasser or intruder. Who then, was Saki referring to as to the interlopers? "Wolves." This is the last line in the story. These are the ones who were unwanted and intruded on these two men. The fear of death would bring these two together but the interlopers would erase what they had just become. I truly believe that these wolves are the ones that Saki was referring to in the…

Almost everyone in this world has had to be apart from something, or someone, for a certain long period of time, at least some point in his or her life. Anyone that has to go through that would have the fear of change; the kind of change that most would not be happy with. In the short story The Red Convertible, written by Louise Erdrich, there were two brothers who went through the same problem. Henry and Lyman had a close brotherly bond relationship, going through adventures together with the car they bought with their money combined. One day, Henry got deployed to Vietnam. As soon as he came back, he was a changed man, inside and out. Henry only wore his worn out clothes, and military boots. He showed no interest to the car as well as to his brother. When both brothers put effort into repairing the relationships, relief was felt. However, at the end, Henry disappeared from the world in a split second, considering how much he’s faded away from his family. The strength of a relationship with a loved one would be tested through obstacles like the parting for a long period of time, the struggle and efforts put into fixing a relationship, and shown whether there is a happy ending or not.…
1) How does Meursault explain to the lawyer how his “physical needs” relate to his “feelings”? How is this significant to our understanding of Meursault?…
Today more than ever, people are grouped into social classes based on their friends. You could be considered popular, or lame. This is not just true for middle school, but also life in the 50s. The book The Outsiders focuses on two main cliques, the Greasers and the Socs. One might think that the name represents Greasers, and what they have to deal with, but the real outsiders are specific people. The outsiders are the people who dare to be different from the stereotype of their group, who believe people should be judged on who they are, not social class. Major outsiders in the book are Darry, Ponyboy, and Cherry Valance.…
Every year in Quill, thirteen-year-olds are sorted into categories: the strong, intelligent Wanteds go to university, the regular Necessaries and the artistic Unwanteds are sent to their deaths. See Alex and Aaron Stowe are twins living in a plain world called Quill, where being imaginative, musical or art gifted are all considered negative traits. All children exhibiting any of these undesired qualities quickly get tagged as "Unwanted", guaranteeing elimination before their thirteenth birthdays. Making everything more complex, Aaron has been labeled "Wanted" while "Alex" is "Unwanted" and sentenced to his death.…
Much of Meursault’s life is similar to that of Camus’ life. They were both born in the same region of Africa and in the same country.…
In the past few presidential elections, the topic of immigration has played a significant role in a plethora of important political discussions and debates about policy reformations. A percentage of Americans lobby for the US to completely close its borders to immigrants, whereas others are convinced it is in the best interest of America to continue to allow immigrants into the country, and even go as far to say America should increase the amount of immigrants sanctioned into the country. In the article “How Immigrants Are Marked as Outsiders,” the author, Michael Jones-Correa, a professor of government at Cornell University and co-author of the book Latino Lives in America: Making it Home, defines exactly what an immigrant is and explains the three critical steps of transitioning from “outsider” to “insider.” In a corresponding fashion, the author of “No Longer an Outsider, but Still Distinct,” Lois Mendoza, who is the chairman of the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies at the University of Minnesota and author of the book, A Journey Around Our America: A Memoir on Cycling,…

In the story “The Stranger” by Albert Camus, the belief that the themes of loss and retrieval are at the core of Mersault’s mythology, and that they illumine the notion of exile to which he returns so often is widely discussed. I however do not believe that either one of those themes has anything to do with the Mersault and the exile to which he returns to so often, rather I believe that Mersault’s own attitude is the reason for the exile he experiences in the story.…
A fundamental aspect of intricate kinship, loyalty within a friendship is a driving force and foundation on which a relationship is constructed, developed, and corrupted. Compelling closeness and loyalty provide the soul with an unmatched unity and comfort in life, and serve as an integral component of one’s intensely intrinsic commitment to another. The deep attachment and relentless devotion associated with such an awareness of fealty can lead to both regrettable and rewarding circumstances.…
In the short story “The Interlopers” by Saki, Ulrich and Georg became friends and they will stay friends even if they had not been killed by wolves. After getting stuck under the tree Ulrich pulls his flask of wine from his coat, then in a surprise gesture he says to Georg, “‘could you reach this flask if I threw it over to you?’” (726). He shows a exceptionaly distinct change to the feeling towards Georg, traditionally most would not drink first-class wine with their enemies. By doing this it shows that Ulrich is warming up to Georg bringing them closer to one another. After being trapped under the tree for a while Ulrich could feel the old fierce hatred fading and said, “‘ Neighbor if you will help me bury this old quarrel I - I will ask…
