The Iran-Contra Scandal
The Iran Contra Affair

Scandals, never really a matter but did this not mean that they were non-existent. Scandals do exist in the United States the biggest scandals are the one where everybody is involved I’m referring to the presidential scandals. Society took notice of how government was keeping information a secret. So U.S citizens dove in deeper to the political region to discover these unknown facts. Presidential scandals became more known after LBJ pentagon papers. Then suddenly Nixon’s Water Gate affair took place and the secret Cambodian bombing.
The Iran-Contra was a Scandalous affair produced by none other than Col. Oliver North. In secrecy and sly fully Col. North sold weapons to Iran. With the money profited from this exchange

The U.S did not want Nicaragua to fall into communism as many other regions did. Under the Corollary system the U.S became the “police” of Latin America. Though this was done in a sneaky matter it was done under good intentions. U.S.A did not want another Ho Chi Mihn, Gorbachev or another Castro.
Implications were not strong to be honest implications were not many. Some people were mad and named him an anti-communist zealot others said he saved Central America. This one scandal did not outweigh all the wonderful things Regan was known to have done. All Regan said was I’m sorry he didn’t know they traded arms for hostages. It was a little blip. Everyone just kind of shrugged it off. It was as if society just said o well. Regan was though of as a great president.
Scandals were always stuck to a name usually a presidents like Nixon and the Water gate affair. The Iran-Contra Did not attach to the name Regan. Regan was like Teflon nothing stuck to him except for all the positive things. Under good intentions or bad it was found out. Though this was a scandalous scandal it was a scandal Regan managed to get off the hook

The Iran Contra Affair was an action not actually approved by the U.S. Congress. Ronald Reagan put in his best efforts to keep communism to a minimum. So, he’s done everything in his power to keep helping Nicaragua, even though it’s going against American laws. He decides to support the Contras who are rebelling against the Cuban backed Sandinistas, which resulted in one of the most talked about scandals in the late 1900’s. In a report from the Public Broadcast Service, they mention that Reagan says the Contras were, “the moral equivalent to our Founding Fathers”. Unfortunately for a very engaged Reagan, a Boland Amendment was made to make funding for Nicaragua difficult. Then, a few years later a second Boland Amendment was made even stronger…

In November, 1986, Lebanese magazine Ash-Shiraa reported that U.S has sold weapons to Iran secretly just to get the hostages freed. A plane that was transferring weapons from U.S. was shot down in Nicaragua. November, 21, Oliver North and his secretary started to shred all the documents that said they and numerous of others were involved in the Iran-Contra Affair. Reagan even tried to deny his involvement to the whole scandal by saying that “A few months ago, I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me that’s true, but the facts and evidence tell me it is not.” This shows, how two-faced and untrustworthy he actually was since he could not even admit the…

    c) Reagan was definitely aware of the Iran Contra, but his involvement is debatable. I would say he we was directly involved and agree that this was a serious scandal. It doesn’t seem like a coincidence that Reagan’s Nicaraguan war was initially made illegal, and then secretly continued by 3rd party funds. He obviously had some direct involvement in funding the Contra’s.…

Communism was slowly building up in the time after the Vietnam War. Soviet Union and the US were splitting up their alliance and most countries were still bouncing back after the recession. Ronald Reagan one the most iconic presidents to sit in the oval office was president at the time. Reagan’s skills got tested from the very start. Few days into his first term there was a huge bombing in Lebanon and just days after that a small Caribbean island started to lose its socialist views and gained communist ones. Reagan believed that dealing with the small island, Grenada, was equal value as dealing with the bombing. Much of the US was tentative on supporting their leader and his military after the US involvement in Vietnam. All faith in the US…

His main goal in his foreign policy was challenge the power of the “Evil Empire” or the Soviet Union. Reagan negotiated with Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbechev, to reduce nuclear weapons and loosen the reins of power in Eastern Europe. Afterwards, the two leaders signed an anti-nuke deal known as the Strategic Defense Initiative. In 1982, Reagan disagreed with Law of the Sea’s international authority and announced that he was not ready to agree with the treaty.(Rumsfield, p. 262, 2011). One of the most damaging incidents in Reagan’s foreign policy was the selling of firearms to Iran for financing the war in Nicaragua. He trained 10,000 Nicaraguan soldiers to dethrone the Sandinistas. Reagan claimed that he had no knowledge of the selling of firearms and many of his officials were…

Apparently, Reagan was aware and approved of the original arms for hostages deal. However, as his National Security Advisor John Poindexter testified, Reagan was not told about the illegal diversion of funds to the Contra rebels. The public was stunned by the news of the scandal Ronald was suppossively involved in and started to question the president’s “good” intentions. For a long time, the public was angry with the president even though there was more evidence supporting the innocence of him rather than the guilty. Reagan was so disappointed, even his wife Nancy said that “…he went into a state of depression because he felt that his reputation had been ruined.”…

The United States had been involved with Nicaragua since 1850. They had been walking over them and the Nicaraguans didn’t seem to respond. In 1907 U.S. war ships took control of the Fonseca Gulf. In 1909, the Nicaraguan Nationalist Government finally decided to take a stand against the control. The government shot two of the U.S. mercenaries, but it only made matters worse for them. The United States decided to get more involved in Nicaraguan affairs, and in 1910 they forced a “puppet government” upon Nicaragua. After many years of this, Nicaragua became dependent on the United States. For example, in 1912 the Nicaraguan President requested U.S. military assistance to help control a civil war. The United States built a canal across Nicaraguan territory, leased the Great and Little Corn Islands, and established a naval base in the Gulf of Fonseca in exchange for three million dollars. In 1914 the Bryan-Chamorro Treaty was signed, and it evokes “anti-North American sentiment and guerrilla warfare in Nicaragua, and elicit[ed] protest from other Central American countries.” Augusto…

The thought alone is scary but this was reality for Fifty-three Americans when they was held hostage at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran. We wanted to stake claim on the possibility of building a canal, and it backfired in a sense. We ended up being involved with a Nicaraguan civil war, where we lost our own troops. Our intervention failed to an extent. We were able to help Nicaragua create a higher functioning government, while continuing to stake claim in the country. The United States intervention was not positive for Nicaragua. We were not wanted there, nor were we that much of a benefit. We should have left sooner, and we should have offered assistance and built a better relationship with Nicaragua without military force. This is similar to our intervention in the Dominican Republic. We once again were trying to create a personal gain for ourselves, and lost. We lost our troops, we lost money and supplies, and we lost respect from other world leaders who were watching us attempt to utilize imperialism over smaller, less advance countries. Ultimately, I think we have learned that not a lot of good comes from trying to take over other countries, and I am glad we have finally learned from our…
