The Island
In the film ‘The Island’, directed by Michael Bay there are many scenes which include various techniques to show a theme. In this scene Lincoln Six-Echo and Jordan two-Delta decide to go back to Dr Merricks Biotech facility and attempt to save their clone friends and destroy the biotech facility. Their moral and compassionate actions allow them to do this and in doing so risk their freedom and lives. In the end it’s their actions that make us understand the system was not right. Bay uses aspects including costumes, dialogue and lighting.
Lighting is a key aspect used throughout the film but particularly in this scene. Light is used in this scene to show how the characters are seen and portrayed. During this scene Dr Merrick is in a tense conversation with Laurent, whilst the camera is fixed on Merrick a beam of light is focused on his face while the surroundings remain dark and black. The dark, black shadows represent the gloomy nature of the Biotech facility and the unbearable power and control Merrick has over everything and anyone. This dark background played an important role in portraying the fact that Merrick was just a pretty face hiding the dark truth of what was really going on. The lighting aspect used in this scene made the viewer’s realise that Merrick had a unanimous amount of power and control over what goes on at the facility.
The main purpose the scene is to validate the idea that the biotech facility system was not right. This scene proves that Dr Merrick’s power and dominance was undoubtedly used in the wrong way and purely for evil. “When did killing become a business for you” This dialogue from Laurent shows that other people are starting to understand that what Dr Merrick is doing is purely killing. But more importantly is shows the viewers the idea of rebellion, they start to understand that about Laurent’s past and how he feels about this situation. At first Laurent was all about finding the runaway clones but now that he has

The theme that had the largest impact on my reading of the novel was that of ethics. The use of human cells without the knowledge of the patient is unethical especially when the education level and social class of that patient is used to the doctors advantage. There were several decisions made throughout the novel in which…

The book The Island at the Center of the World by Russell Shorto was very interesting and gave me a different view on history. I felt the story that was told was very intriguing but it did get confusing at times. There were parts in the book where he would discuss an important person like Adriaen Van der Donck for example in one chapter then he would jump to a new person in the next chapter and then Van der Donck would be mentioned again two chapters later. This was hard to follow because he would jump from person to person and mention many dates that it was hard to keep up with what he was saying. However, regarding his argument that Manhattan is what started America he does an excellent job at proving this. One example of this is “…in…

It is not uncommon that many students are taught that the colony of New Amsterdam had a short-lived non revolutionary life before the British takeover in 1664, but Russell Shorto contradicts that with recently unearthed Dutch records and his book The Island at the Center of the World. This story focuses on the New Netherlands Dutch colony and its influence on the city and state of New York, which Shorto states when saying “It is a distinctly European tale, but also a vital piece of America’s beginning.” (Shorto 1).…

Nolan also uses lighting to convey the storyline. In the color scenes, there is realistic lighting. In the black and white scenes with Sammy Jenkins there is soft lighting emphasizing that it is a flashback. In the black and white scenes with Leonard talking on the phone in the hotel room, there is low key lighting where there is a sharp contrast between light and dark.…

The use of key lighting is to further enhance and illuminate the main source of attention, which is Hamlet and Yorick’s skull. The key lighting used also softens the dark atmosphere in which the scene takes place in so it does not dominate the shot. Just as the gravedigger says, “This same skull, sir, was Yorick’s skull, the king’s jester.” (IV, I, 165-166) and as Hamlet takes the skull and holds it up, the background is dark for the sole purpose of making Hamlet and the skull stand out prominently. Branagh’s use of key lighting adds on to the mood of mystery and Doran’s use of fill light falls in sync with the solemn atmosphere his setting provides. In addition, the theme of death is portrayed thorugh many different examples though out the play. The scene of death takes place in a forest surrounded by darkness and the aspect of darkness is often presumed to be a symbol of mystery, fear and obscurity The author ties in the darkness of the forest along with the theme of death. Hamlet refers to death as , “…the undiscover’d country, from whose bourn no traveller returns, puzzles the will,” (III, I, 79-80). This sounds more interesting and the audiences back then love the way it’s…
