The Kite Runner Argumentative Essay
When one person does something wrong, that person was affected by himself or by other people. This quote is related to Amir, the main character in the novel The Kite Runner. The novel The Kite Runner was wrote by Khaled Hosseini. It is talking about Amir; he is a wealthy boy in Kabul, Afghanistan. He has a best friend name Hassan. Amir is the owner in other Hassan is his servant. They are friend when they are the kid but when Hassan in the dangerous situation, Amir did not help him out instead of help Hassan, he decides to run away to protect himself. Although Amir is victimized by both internal and external forces, it is mainly his own cowardice, jealousy, and shame which cause his relationship with Hassan to deteriorate and lead to their tragedy.
At first, he is jealous with Hassan because he thinks baba love Hassan more than him. "I wished I too had a scar that would beget Baba's sympathy. It wasn't fair." (Hosseini 50) In this quote, Amir is jealous with Hassan because now, Hassan is looking the same with baba. He has the same scar. It will make baba love him more. Besides it, in the family, Hassan is the servant he can get a lot of love from baba while Amir need to work hard but he still not get the love from baba. This reason makes him think Hassan is stealer who steals baba’s love. When Amir want to make Hassan become a theft, baba turns him to shock “Except Baba stunned me by saying, “I forgive you” (Hosseini 112) Baba is a strictly person. He does not like any one do something bad and especially that is stealing. When baba says “I forgive you”, it makes Amir feel jealous to them. In the beginning of the novel, when Amir asks his father about which sin with baba is the biggest and baba answer that is stealing. This is the reason that makes him get shock. He is jealous to them because he thinks if baba knows that he tell the lie to baba, baba will never look at him again. The way Baba treats to Hassan that create the wall that stop the friendship between Amir and Hassan The second, he is coward because when he sees Hassan was raping by other people, he did not do anything to help Hassan. “I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan- the way he’d stood up for me all those times in the past- and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end, I ran.” (Hosseini 82) Amir says this when he watching Hassan was raped by Assef and two other guys. When Amir sees Hassan in the dangerous situation, he does not go out to protect him instead he runs away. He leaves Hassan behind even though he knows that Hassan will be hit by Assef. He says he felt frightened of being hurt by Assef. His cowardice makes him become a betrayal with his best friend the person who protects him. “You’re a coward!” I said. “Nothing but a goddam coward!” (Hosseini 98) This quote happens when Amir throws a pomegranate to Hassan. He is talking to Hassan and also for himself. Hassan is coward person because he does not fight back to Amir. Amir is coward because he runs away when Hassan is raping by Assef. He cannot face to Hassan again because he will remember the time he run away and lets Hassan behind him. He is hoping when he throws the pomegranate to Hassan, it will make him angry and fight back. Amir will feel better for his guilt. Amir has his own character but it makes him give one of his best friend Hassan when he in danger.
Finally, he feels shame to himself so that he wants to kick Hassan out of the family so he can get an easy life. “Baba, have you ever thought about getting new servants.” (Hosseini 95) Until this moment, Amir feels bad when Hassan come and asks him to go out and have fun. He feels bad when Hassan still ask to hangout. He decides to ask his father about the change the new servants. If baba agrees, he will be better for his life from now and in the future but unfortunately, baba does not agree for that and he yelling Amir that he will not change anyone. He has to live the guilt with Hassan. “Either way, this much had become clear: One of us had to go”. (Hosseini 108) From this point, he cannot suffer the feeling guilty any more. He wants Hassan get out of his house immediately or he should go. Hassan in this moment, he always shows his loyal to Amir. When Amir does something bad to Hassan, he does not fight back even Amir has thrower the pomegranate him and this reason make Amir feels more guilt. He decides one of them should go so he can be free from the guilt. He will not see Hassan with his guilt again. Amir wants to make his guilt to be less, he sacrifices his friend and he want to kick them out of the house.
Throughout the novel, Amir is victimized by the internal force. Baba treat Hassan equally to Amir and it make Amir jealous with Hassan. When he sees Hassan was raped, he runs away because he worry he will get into trouble. After that, when he wants to be free from guilt, he want to kick Hassan out of the house. Cowardice, jealousy, and shame are the main reasons to make him do something wrong to Hassan, his best friend. Hassan needs to suffer the raping, racism and being a theft and the person who make it is Amir. Even though everything that Amir has done is wrong but it is from the internal that affected on him.
