The Life of Christina Carter Christina Carter displayed courage when she was discriminated against by people she thought was supposed to love and accept the life that she was destined to live. Even though she dealt with life threatening experiences that was a part of her life, she continued to fight her battles with confidence and determination living life to the fullest. Christina Carter, born Christopher Carter on August 14, 1968, was a person who struggled to live a “normal life” as a transgendered woman. Transgender is when a person born of one sex believes that they are meant to be born as the opposite sex. Growing up living life as a male was very difficult for Christopher because deep down inside he felt that he was meant to be a female. Since he wasn’t what society deems as a “normal boy,” others mistreated him and he wasn’t accepted by his own family or friends. Once in high school, Christopher tried out for the cheerleading squad, making him the first male to try-out at that school. He made the squad and was very determined to prove to others that he deserved to be treated equally like anyone else. During his senior year Christopher began to experiment in wearing girl clothes. His family never accepted him being a “feminine boy,” but now wearing girl clothes just added extra embarrassment for the Carter family. Christopher was immediately given an ultimatum to act like a “normal boy” or to get out of their house and never look back. Tired of living a lie to please everyone else except for himself, Christopher left his parents’ house and moved in with some older friends who shared the same struggle as he. With all of the setbacks that he endured, he was determined to continue high school and graduate on time. Surprisingly, Christopher earned an academic scholarship to Norfolk State University.
