My choice for my book report is the lightning thief by Rick Riordan, it was called the lightning thief because Percy Jackson who is the protagonist of the story was accused of stealing the weapon of Zeus (the lightning bolt) Percy had two friends in camp half-blood namely Grover and Annabeth. These two people help our hero Percy in his quest to prove that he did not steal the lightning bolt from Zeus. There is also Luke, the real lightning thief, who acted nice to Percy in order to frame him up. To sum it all up the book is about a special little boy who feels inferior because he has ADHD and dyslexia. Later on, he was sent to camp half-blood in order to be protected from Hades and his monsters. But knowing that they are
accusing him that he stole something that he didn’t Percy quickly sneaked out of camp half-blood with Grover and Annabeth, his newly founded friends, in search the lightning bolt and his mother who he found on the underworld. She was being held captive by Hades. When Percy was about to return the lightning bolt, which was in his shield all along, to Zeus, Percy was confronted by Luke, the real lightning thief, to prevent him from giving back the lightning bolt to Zeus in order to make him furious and unleash a war amongst the gods. Then he overpowered Luke and returned the lightning bolt to Zeus .
For me the book was very entertaining and has a good lesson attached to it. Also, I have been a fan of greek mythology since I was a kid. Its references quickly amused me.
II. Analysis and Evaluation
For me, the author’s purpose was to teach people to find the courage to do what they know is right, and to use that courage to help them face many problems that they will encounter in the latter part of their life. If this is the real purpose of the author I would say that he was successful on achieving his purpose, because I was very motivated to do what is right after I read the story. I wanted to be like Percy Jackson who stood up for himself in spite of the people loathing him. The writing of the story was very creative because the author used modern objects to represent the hero’s hindrances. I think the book is lacking on a backstory for the supporting characters.
I really enjoyed reading not only the book but the series made by Rick Riordan. It helped me reminisce on my childhood through its greek mythology references. I would recommend it to people who has a passion for a greek mythology with a pinch of romance.
III. Conclusion
To sum it all up, the book is very interesting to read, I’m in awe that the author was able to connect the modern time to something non-fiction. It is the first book in the series and I’m excited to read the next one.
