This reading selection is "The Little Store" by Eudora Welty. The reason that I chose this particular piece from this passage is because throughout the course of this story Welty seemed to have her nose in the business of others. She did not talk much about her family but more so about what was happening
in other people's lives. In this part she felt obligated to the information in the Sessions family just because she was a regular customer in the Little Store. I feel that it is not a child's place to know things that are happening in another family, particularly in an adult relationship. The main thing talked about has to do with the people and families that she passed on her way to the Little Store. I felt as if this is important today in the world because nothing has changed. For some reason people still feel obligated to know about the lives of others. Most people focus on the problems of others more than they focus about their own. This is just a small piece of a bigger picture throughout this selection.
A tragedy took place in the Sessions family and word traveled to the children. The kids did not know exactly what was going on they just knew something bad happened. She wanted to know what had transpired so badly that she went and asked her parents. She tried to get information from her parents about the situation and they told her "until the time comes for you to know." The knowledge of a tragedy taking place and her not knowing exactly what only made her more curious. The only solution to her eagerness to know was only to fill in the blanks for herself. This developed her as a character because she learned that everything is not meant to be known. She also learned if it is meant for you to find out you will find out when you are supposed to. If your not supposed to know you won't ever know.
