The fast food industry didn’t start as recently as we might think. Cooked food vendors have existed for hundreds of years in China, India, and ancient Europe. During those times, most people purchased their food in the streets because they didn’t own a kitchen or have the needed resources that would enable them to cook their own food. In fact, fast food was then as it is today, the food for the poor. For many years during that time, hamburger was considered a low quality food, as it was a mixture of scraped and spoiled meat.
Upon the dawning of the twentieth century, the fast food industry experienced a change. The discovery of grilled meat stimulated the emergence of the hamburger era. White Castle, a company founded in 1921, was the first to take measures to change the public’s opinion of the fast food industry. They provided customers with a transparent view of their cooking process, as well as, insight into the high quality of the ingredients being used to produce their hamburgers. White Castle also provided a friendlier and cleaner environment, which was appealing to consumers. During this time, they also offered their hamburgers for a very low price! The McDonald brothers, Dick and Mac, started McDonald’s in 1948 when they opened their first fast food restaurant. Originally they offered primarily BBQ but then moved away from BBQ and changed to a nine-item menu featuring a hamburger, cheeseburger, three soft drinks, milk, coffee, chips, pie, French fries, and milkshakes. They quickly observed that hamburgers and fries were on the top of their demand list. McDonald’s also offered drive-in style dining, resembling what one could have seen in the 1950’s. They also offered a double drive-through later in the 1980’s to increase the speed of the order-taking process.
Taco Bell, KFC, Subway, and Burger King entered the market soon after and continued grew at a rapid past. The franchise system
