The Lost Summer

During the exposition of The Lost Summer, we are introduced to Helena, Katie Bell, Winn, Ransome and Lizbeth as they all reunite at Southpoint summer camp. A song that relates to this part of the book is, “Here Comes the Sun”, by The Beatles. The lyrics state, “Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter/ Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here/ Here comes the sun.” All the campers and counselors have been waiting all year long to be back at camp and they all think it has taken a lifetime to be back. In the rising action, Helena becomes best friends with Winn. The song that relates to the rising action is, “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne. The lyrics state, “But you become/ somebody else/ ‘Round everyone else/ Watchin’ your back/ Like you can’t relax/ your tryin’ to be cool/ you look like a fool to me.” These lyrics show how Katie Bell is thinking, because Helena is starting to ignore her and she also got embarrassed when Katie Bell tried to take a picture with her. The song that goes with the climax is, “Take a Bow” by Rihanna. The lyrics state, “Don’t tell me your sorry ‘cause you’re not/ Baby when I know you’re only sorry you got caught.” The first thing that happens is Helena starts working on the dock with Ransome because Winn gets mad at her and doesn’t believe her when she says she’s sorry. The other event that happened was Helena was driving the boat and crashed into another boat and she felt really bad because there were kids on the boat as well as Ransome. The song that goes with the falling action is,” Map of your Head” by Muse. The lyrics state,” I hit my head on it/ and woke up to know/ that I was all alone.” This relates to how Helena hits her head on the boat and gets a concussion. She doesn’t wake up for 5 weeks and when she does, she’s confused and keeps asking where Ransome is and she sadly finds out that he had to leave for college a couple weeks before.
