The Vietnam War commonly known as the Second Indochina War began as a conflict in 1959, after five years of the division of the country by the Geneva Accords. The United States and other members of the SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization) joined forces with South Vietnam in contesting communist forces comprised of South Vietnamese supporters of the communist National Liberation Front known as Viet Cong (VC), and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). In addition, the North had benefited from military and financial support from China and the Soviet Union who were members of the Communist block. In 1973 a “third” Vietnam war began but more of a continuation, between North and South Vietnam but without the U.S. involvement. It ended with a communist victory in April 1975 with the North Vietnamese conquering South Vietnam.
