¨A house divided against itself cannot stand.” These are the words of Abraham Lincoln. He believed that slavery was not right, and this was the reason our country went to the Civil War. There were many causes of the Civil War. The primary cause was slavery. Some events with conflicts were the Compromise of 1850, Fugitive state law, Uncle Tomś cabin, and the Election of 1860. All of these events were linked with slavery. One cause of the Civil War was the Compromise of 1850. In this event California wanted to be admitted as a free state. There were many disagreements whether each state should be free or slave. In the text it states, ¨I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free.” This
shows how Abraham Lincoln felt about slavery. After the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive State law was made. In this law, anyone who resembled or had the qualities of runaway slave was captured. This was not right because many people who were not slaves were captured too. Another cause of the Civil War was Uncle Tomś Cabin. This was a book about a slave who was beaten and whipped by his master. The South did not want people to find out how the slaves were treated so they tried to not let this secret get out. The South always had a different point of view on things. For, example the South wanted Slavery and the North did not. The North and the South had always disagreed on many things. In the Election of 1860, they said that if Abraham Lincoln was elected the would leave the union. After this, many other states also threatened they would leave the union. Overall, Slavery was the primary reason of the Civil war. As you can see the the Compromise of 1850, Fugitive state law, Uncle Tomś cabin, and the Election of 1860 were all linked with slavery. The nation had many disagreements related to slavery.
