Are you contemplating becoming a nontraditional student in favor of taking time off after high school before heading to college? What are the advantages of going to college right after high school in the first place?
There are numerous reasons to going to college. Getting an education is key to avoiding living in poverty, in any country in the world. The wealthiest people in the world are either well educated, born into their wealth, or they stumble onto something that makes them wealthy by pure luck. Therefore unless your family is rich and you will inherit their wealth when they die or you consider yourself an unusually lucky person, you should try to get the most education that you possibly can. “America's future walks through the doors of our schools every day”. Mary Jean LeTendre
You will not be eligible for any job that pays a decent wage, and many employers will be unwilling to hire you because not graduating from high school does not show employers that you follow through with your goals. School is something that is very challenging and it takes most people at least thirteen years to complete. If you do not stay in school, you have essentially wasted all of the time that you were in school, not to mention you are building numerous barriers for yourself that will be incredibly difficult for you to overcome. High school is, in most cases, a person's last shot at a free education and no matter how hard or unpleasant you find it; there is no reason for not finish it. An employer will usually understand a person who has finished high school and is looking to obtain good job to either support themselves for their adult life or to enable them to afford the costs of attending college. Mark Twain said “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”
The numbers bear out that a high school graduate can expect to earn an average $1.2 million over the course of his working life. When this worker holds an associate degree, he is likely to increase his earnings to $1.6 million. For a bachelor's degree holder, this amount goes up to $2.1 million. A master’s degree holder may expect to make about $2.5 million over the course of his working life, while a doctorate degree increases earnings to $3.4 million. Finally, a professional degree may offer the opportunity of earning $4.4 million.
Another reason that you should stay in school is for the problem solving skills that you learn in high school to help you deal with a wide variety of problems that may arise after you become a self sufficient adult. No other part of your educational experience up to high school focuses more on your life as an adult than your high school years. If you do not stay in school long enough to obtain these skills for adulthood, you will be ill equipped to handle them when they come up. “If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress”. Barack Obama
One more reason that you should stay in school is because you are building relationships with friends that could potentially influence the way that you handle other countless people throughout the world who have friends that they met in school, and they are friends way beyond their high school years. By not staying in school until graduate you, you could prematurely break off those friendships and lose out on all of the positive influences that these friends could bring to your life.
It is apparent that there is no easy answer when it comes to making this education decision. That being said, facts and figures do bear out that foregoing the gap year in favor of a continuous education experience does help the average student to come out ahead.

Why go to college? Why would someone spend thousands of dollars to sit in yet another classroom? My uncle says “people that get a degree make over a million dollars more in a lifetime.” My dad counters that with “the world needs ditch diggers too.” I came to college to start my life, to become an independent man who finds his niche among society. I suppose some people can do that outside of school but I find college to be an optimum transition to the adult life as it teaches practical skills, instills a greater appreciation of the world, and makes one discontent with inequities in the community.…
