The Meaning of Personal Responsibility

The Meaning of Personal Responsibility Have you ever known someone who constantly blames someone else for their own mistakes? No matter what, they will not take responsibility for their own actions. There are some people in this world that lack personal responsibility. While it is easy to blame, justify, and depend on others for your personal needs, I believe Personal Responsibility means being accountable for your own actions. It is self-awareness of your own life success. You are the one in control of yourself, no one else. Personal responsibility means being accountable for your own actions. People who are not personally responsible people tend to blame others for their own mistakes. Let us be real for a moment, we all have blamed others for something we have done wrong. That doesn’t make us not a personally responsible person. It means we are human. I am talking about the person who blames other people or makes excuses all the time. For example let’s take academics for instants. A student can blame the teacher or instructor for failing on an exam. However, a student who has personal responsibility will not blame the teacher but will look closely at why the failure happened. Did the student understand something incorrectly? Did the student not study the material enough? Another example, is a person without personal responsibility are influenced by others. Such as, if a student does not turn their homework in on time, they might say: Well, Johnny said it was not due until Friday”. Instead of double checking when the assignment was due, they passed the blame to another student. By having personal responsibility others will respect you. People get tired and aggravated of getting blame all the time. Especially when it is not their fault to begin with. Surrounding yourself with positive people who already have personal responsibility is key to being personal

Personal responsibility is an essential element in every aspect of one’s life. What exactly does personal responsibility mean; the answer is most likely different for everyone. Chuck Gallozzi may have summed it up best when he stated, “Responsibility is not a burden, it is a blessing” (Gallozzi, 2009, title page). Those nine simple words speak volumes in that taking responsibility or holding oneself accountable, answerable, for their actions or inactions, accepting the consequences that result from those actions or inactions and most important, understanding the effect one has on family, friends, loved ones, coworkers, and classmates. Gallozzi went on to say, “No, we are not responsible for all that happens to us, but we are responsible for how we think, feel and act when they happen” (Gallozzi, 2009, Para 1).…

Personal responsibility to me is acknowledging responsibility for actions and decisions made, accepting the consequences that may follow from them, and understanding that others around will be involved. Every day choices or decisions are made from experiences taught or from experiences learned. The only choices people want to be responsible for are the decisions considered honorable or right. People also make bad decisions but do not want to be accountable for them. In life the choices made will guide the way people live whether responsible or irresponsible. Only be responsible for he/she decisions. As noted by Ron Haskins (2009), “Personal responsibility is the willingness to both accept the importance of standards that society establishes for individual behavior and to make strenuous personal efforts to live by those standards. But personal responsibility also means that when individuals fail to meet expected standards, they do not look around for some factor outside themselves to blame.”…

In life, we cannot rely on other people to do things for us. It is so easy to blame the people around us when things go wrong, but ultimately it is up to me to determine whether or not I will succeed in life. Everyone has goals in life, but the only way to achieve them is to be realistic and set goals for themselves. Responsibility is more than just thinking or wanting to do something; it is about the actions that go along with those intentions. I love this quote from…

Personal responsibility is to have respect for themself and others around us. Responsibilities are where we take care of what needs done. Either in our personal lives, work, and in school. We as adults are responsible to take care of what needs done for each task that we take on for that day. If we are not responsible for what we do, we will not get what needs accomplished for that day. Responsible also means that we take account for our actions, no matter how big or how small the problem may be, and facing the consequences, results, and the outcome that your actions create. When people hear the word “responsibility,” they do not truly realize that it is easier than they think, and it comes naturally. “The power behind taking responsibility for your actions lies in putting an end to negative thought patterns. You no longer dwell on what went wrong or focus on whom you are going to blame. You don't waste time building roadblocks to your success. Instead, you are set free and can now focus on succeeding.” ― Lorii Myers…

What does personal responsibility mean? To me personal responsibility means that I am responsible for what I choose in life. I have to hold myself accountable and cannot blame others for the choices I make. Jake Lawson wrote on the Livestrong.com website, “Accepting personal responsibility includes but is not limited to: acknowledging that you are solely responsible for the choices in your life and accepting that you are responsible for what you choose to feel or think” (Lawson, 2011). That statement is very profound and powerful. It is easy to place the blame on others but all that really does is hold us back from finding our true potential. We cannot use scapegoats to hide the fact that we possibly make bad decisions in life. Whichever direction my life heads, I am the captain of this ship and I cannot let others control what I do. I have control over my emotional responses to outside interference and must live with the consequences of my actions. In the Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 89 (Issue 4), 497-515, Dana Klein wrote ‘people are responsible when they act with the ability to do the right thing for the right reasons, or a good thing for good reasons.’(Klein, pg. 497) What exactly does that mean? It means that if we choose not to do the right thing or make bad decisions, they have not shown personal responsibility. I have to be willing to improve myself professionally, academically and personally in life. I can never be complacent or else I will never accomplish more and…
