‘’Never judge a book by its cover.’’ This is the English idiom we have been using for years to try to stop people from judging others by their appearance. It is completely wrong to judge others by appearance, but unfortunately it has been going on for many years across the world and still is today! Judging can be become infectious and can cause more negative thoughts on an individual. In both the short story ‘’The Minister’s Black Veil’’ by Nathaniel Hawthorne and the poem, ‘’Dream Variations’’ by Langston Hughes, the main characters are misunderstood by their societies.
A simple change can easily create confusion. The main character in ‘’The Minister’s Black Veil’’ Mr. Hooper lives in small town in New England, during the 18th century. He is a married priest with a great reputation in the town he lives in. One Sunday morning, everyone is on their way to attend church. Since the veil is black and dark it gives off an evil look. More discussion spreads through the town, with comments like ‘’The black veil, though it covers only our pastor’s face, throws it influence over his whole person, and makes him ghostlike from head to foot…’’ and ‘’and I would not be alone with him for the world. I wonder he is not afraid to be alone with himself!’’ Without even knowing why Mr. Hooper is wearing the black veil, citizens are quick to judge.
