NERDS! Everyone remembers how nerds are represented in movies and TV. The person with the giant glasses, pimples, no friends and can quote every episode of Star Trek in Klingon. The 1984 movie Revenge of the Nerds shows a group of people that fits these stereotypes. In this essay, I will show how the media has shown the several different types of stereotypes, but these are usually wrong. I will show that even if you are smart, or in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) field, you are not necessarily the glasses wearing, pimple having, large glasses, and Klingon quoting person.

However, the assumption that introverts are nerds can be argued against because not all introverts show an interest in technology and sciences. For instance, women are found to be introverts, but they are rarely interested in the techy businesses. Additionally, it can be observed that probably, nerds were once extroverts but the society kept on ridiculing them for liking comics and video games that they became withdrawn. The community celebrated being a jerk, active, and physical. The perceptions were reinforced because the media perpetuated these misconceptions. However, the nerdy perceptions are transforming whereby people are not categorized depending on what they are passionate about, but through how an individual loves something (Cheese, 2012). In the modern days, being a nerd you do not need to be ugly and wearing big glasses, you have to be passion about something or a subject that you cannot consider yourself without it. An individual is compelled to celebrate his or her passion, talk about it with pride, sing about it, and read about it, without considering any detachment. Therefore, they have proved that being nerds does not mean they have to be enclosed in NASA or be full-time mathematicians and scientists (Zweifel, 2014). Drawing conclusions from celebrities and politicians, nerds have been shown that they can be cool, stylish, outspoken, and extroverts. People can watch their favorite sci-fi movies and read the comic books without being judged and ridiculed. The celebrity nerds who enjoy acting the sci-fi movies prove that nerds are not hiding anymore. Instead of stating that nerds are introverts it is best if they are classified as proud and passion about their favorite subject.
In summary, the media covers nerds in a misleading way imposing judgment and ridicule upon them. Nerds are outspoken people who in a comfortable environment they cannot stop talking concerning their favorite subjects. Nerds are attentive to detail to comprehend about their passion. Therefore, as the media perpetuate them, nerds are not freaks, although they are selectively social.
