My purpose this week was to observe translations in the 3rd grade classroom at Moss elementary with a female teacher named Ms. Bowens. As i arrive to Ms. Bowens classroom i noticed the 3rd grade students knew how to work on the math problems on their own while the teacher allows the students to talk amongst their assigned group. As the students work on their assignment the teacher walks around the classroom helping the students that doesn't understand a question by going to each group.…
One person who has been very influential in my life is Ms. Toni Gallow. Ms. Gallow is my former physical science teacher. She has inspired me so much. Not only did she teach me regularly in class, she taught me a lot about life. Ms. Gallow was very caring, unlike most teachers at Buckeye Trail. Ms. Gallow always encouraged her students to be the best they could be.…
The poverty rate in Memphis is an issue which emanates passion on the inside of my soul. It is evident how poverty influences Memphis in a plethora of ways. Poverty creates a ripple effect which trickles over into the crime rate, education levels and the overall quality of life in the city. There is a sect in the city where poverty has become the norm. Generation after generation the expectation is to remain in the same predicament as their predecessors.…
As the end of the year approached, all the students began to choose what classes they would take the next year, and for each core class, the student would need the signature of approval on their choice for next year. When I brought my course selection sheet to Mr. Brown, he noted that I had signed up for on-level junior English, and then he stated that he wouldn't sign my sheet unless I was going into advanced English again the next year. So I changed my choice on the paper so he would sign it, then I erased what I had changed and signed up for the on-level class, because I knew I would do better in a non-advanced class, and my grade point average had already suffered…
Growing up reading and writing has always been a part of my life; you could always catch my mom sitting in her chair with a book by her favorite author in her hand. I’ll always remember the day that she read a play to me, she was never into theatre as a kid but she read it as if she had been on Broadway. I think that is where my love for reading as well as theatre first started, just watching her so focused and completely into a book. It always amazed me and to this day it still does. I’ve also had some amazing teachers throughout my school years. Have you ever had those teachers who would do anything in the world for you? The teachers who just made you so excited to learn? I know that I have a few; they are the ones that you could never forget. From my English teachers to my theatre teachers, they have all made a difference in my life. I know that it sounds crazy that theatre ties in with all of this, but it does in so many ways.…
My heart raced from the ridiculous amount of coffee I had consumed that morning. I tentatively stepped into the dark, empty classroom and took a seat in the second row. As an English major, I resented the fact that I was required to take US History 201. I disliked history, and I heard rumors that my professor, Dr. Grimm, was a tough grader. The only contingent that caused me to feel slightly happy was the fact that I would be in the same class as Hannah Colasurdo, my longtime best friend. I had known Hannah since I was ten years old, and she had been there for me though my best and worst moments. Little did I know that this history class would cause me to fall to one of the lowest points of my entire life.…
Life is a cycle of learning in which we learn every day by experiences, anecdotes or by someone else. Now, it is hard to find a person who really cares about us or at least someone who wants to help us to succeed in the future. However, we found that there are some special teachers that are a great example of learning how to succeed in life. In the two stories of “my favorite teacher” by Thomas L. Friedman, and “Unforgettable Miss Bessie” by Carl T. Rowan, we find two incomparable persons who made a change in their students’ life. They both were a motivating influence for their students. Carl Rowan’s teacher Miss Bessie and Thomas Friedman’s teacher Hattie Steinberg…
An outstanding educator possesses unique qualities that set him or her apart from others in the field. Ask any student about a favorite teacher and listen intently as he or she describes that person with a smile. Ask a parent of a child who will enter first grade in the fall about the teacher choice for their child. The parent would describe the outstanding educator in their desire for that special teacher. The qualities of an outstanding educator are easily recognized by those whose lives they touch, shape, and change on a daily basis. It is in this writing piece that they will be described and discussed.…
The reasoning behind this is simply that my junior and senior literature and english teachers have been one of the biggest influences that I have in my life. Not only have they given me a broad understanding of literature, but they have taught me more about how to endure and enjoy life and also to stay true to myself than anyone that I have ever known. They have always taught me that the best way to get ahead in life is to be one hundred percent true to myself, as well as to work hard to achieve my goals. They have also expanded my creative mind, showing me that there is always more than one way to go about solving a problem or reaching a successful point in my…
“Prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man’s appetite by legislation and makes crimes out of things that are not crimes.” -Abraham Lincoln The banning of alcohol only made people want to buy more of it, and break the law. Although most people agree that the banning alcohol was a good thing, some also think that it was a bad thing.…
Often times we do not consider how a teacher has influenced us. Teachers influence whether we realize it or not can alter a student’s perspective on life. A great many of my previous teachers have left a lasting impression on me that will never be forgotten. I do admit there were much contentment, anguish and memorable things that directly connects me to them. Without my teachers, it is highly impossible for me to stand and be here today.…
In order to be an outstanding teacher, one must have multiple qualities and a certain demeanor. An outstanding teacher must first have a personality that is opened to change and continuous learning. The field of education is ever developing to meet the needs of a diverse population. Therefore, teachers must be prepared to adapt and seek out professional development opportunities in order to meet the needs of all learners. An outstanding teacher must also be willing to commit to working beyond the walls of their own classroom. Teaching is a profession that requires a career presence beyond the traditional forty hour work week. Once an individual has taken on this role, they must be prepared to assist their students by providing extra instructional time, developing and preparing lessons that encourage students to reach their full potential as well as participate in extracurricular activities that build both a sense of community…
I have seen how angry Mrs. McCormick gets when people talk over her or be on their phones. Mrs. McCormick gives the student all the information needed for the project or paper. Also I learned that it helps a lot actually reading the novels. I read most of The Great Gatsby and that helped tremendously on that paper. One regret is that I for sure did less than was expected of me. I had senioritis from day one and that affected my value of work. I am satisfied with this class, I loved the free time and the great discussions in here with fellow classmates. A regret though is not working harder on those…
The moment I found myself sitting at my desk, confused and shocked at the grade I had been given. Being the egotistical brat I was at the time, my first thoughts were “This has to be a mistake, an obvious mistake.” I waited for the end of class, fidgeting in my seat every second, all the while reassuring myself that I could sort everything out. Finally, the bell rang loudly and after the rest of the students had shot out of their seat and headed for the door, I stood and walked over to her desk and politely inquired about my essay. She quickly looked over the first two pages then handed me back the essay with little enthusiasm. “Your writing skills need some work. You were going off subject quite a bit”, she informed me. With an ego my size, even the smallest of criticism hit me hard. I nodded and realized that I still had so much to work on, but I was oddly confident this teacher could help me. Mrs. Hoer was her name, and I began to respect her more than any English teacher I had prior. She showed me how writing is far more than just sitting down at home and trying to think of something profound that will impress a teacher. I learned that language can have endless meaning and give so much enjoyment for readers who take the time to analyze literature. Questioning an author’s credibility and their reason for writing a particular piece were things I had never been asked to do until her English class. Throughout my senior year in high school I learned more than I ever had in the class with her. The concept I had of how easy English was became shattered, and I found myself being far more open to new ideas and styles or writing. If I had not been transferred into AP English that year, I may have never gotten over myself, and would have never progressed as far as I…
