According to Internet Safety 101, “82 percent of all sex crimes where as a minor is the victim, the predator used a social media site or chat profile to gain information on the victim...In the 65 percent of these cases information was gathered that lead directly to a child’s home or school.” Kids often give out their location when showing off a report card or posting pictures of their school’s sports teams. It seems harmless to them since they are only expecting their friends and family to see those pictures. Those personal and simple pictures also give predators a chance to befriend the victims since they now have information they can use to sympathize with them.The prevalence of this issue is so widespread that most people do not see its significance. The website also stated, “There are more than 700,000 registered sexual offenders in the United States, and many are lost to the imperfect system that can’t track them. The scariest statistic may be that 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls will be sexually abused before adulthood.” Registered sex offenders are all around us, and this statistics do not take into account those whose charges were dropped or victims who were too afraid to speak up. There has been so many kids abused that almost all families have a relative who has gone through a sexual assault.
