Many characters of the ancient Greek myths became more widely known thanks to the tales of the Odyssey. Odysseus’s journey has entertained generations upon generations of readers, and changed the lives of many. But what happened before Odysseus had met these characters? What was their life like? Poseidon was part of the first generation of Greek gods, and ruler of the seas. He was the son of Cronus and Rhea, and many people believed when he was born he was eaten by Cronus along with the rest of his brothers and sisters. (Poseidon) After the Titans were defeated, the land was split up between the three brothers. Zeus became master of the skies, Hades became king of the Underworld, and Poseidon became god of the seas. This is probably the most popular story told about Poseidon and his brothers, but he went on to do much more, such as competing with Athena to decide who would dominate Athens, creating the first horse as a result, and sending a sea-monster to Troy for having them refuse to pay them for building their walls. He is known as the god of the sea, rivers, flood and drought, earthquakes, and horses.(POSEIDON) In the Odyssey, his connection with Odysseus isn’t the nicest. Since Odysseus blinded his son Polyphemus, the cyclops curses him, saying that he will never return back to his home, and even if he is destined to, for it to take a very long time. Poseidon fills Polyphemus’s wishes, and it takes Odysseus many years to return home.
