The Omnipresence of Reading
The Omnipresence of Reading Reading is part of everyday life and a necessity. We read every day even when we are not aware that we are. We are introduced to reading and start reading since the day we are born, I may even say that even so when we are in our mother’s womb. Reading is first done by our nervous system in our body. A newborn is capable of feeling things such as pain. Take a sleeping newborn and pinch him. The nervous system will pick up the action and send the signal to the brain, where the brain then reads or interprets the signal and causes a reaction. In this case the baby will feel what is known as pain and cause the baby to cry. In the Word of Elohim (G-d), in the book of Lukas in chapter 1 versus 39-45 we find:
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Yahudah (Judea), 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Ruah HaKodesh (Holy Spirit). 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my (Adoni) Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that Yahweh would fulfill his promises to her!”
In these versus we clearly have the understanding that the baby in the womb leaped due to the greeting received by Elizabeth. So therefore, there must have been some type of reading done by the baby in order for him to react that way. Now that I think of another verse, I may say that reading or a form of reading has been present since the beginning of eternity. In the book of Yahanan (John) in chapter 1 and verse 1 we find:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Yahweh, and the Word was Yahweh.
Now that I have a conscious understanding of what reading is, since I can remember I

In the article written by Dwight MacDonald, “Reading and Thought,” MacDonald disagrees with Henry Luce idea of functional curiosity. Luce invented the term “ functional curiosity,” meaning “kind of searching, hungry interest in what is happening everywhere” (248). MacDonald’s opinion of functional curiosity is that it only strengthen practice in reading rather than giving valuable information. Dwight considers today’s literature as inadequate and overwhelming. MacDonald believes that all reading done in present society is “shallow thinking.” MacDonald believes by skimming through the text, we become more coarse, shallow, passive, and unoriginal. I agree with MacDonald that there is a great amount of unexceptional literature all around us, but MacDonald does not take into account the advancements in the technological world, the lifestyles of todays society and students.…

Although I don’t remember exactly how I learned to read, I guess it sort of came to me as a little child when my parents used to read me prayers and stories from the Bible. In middle school, reading was essential in getting a good grade for English with the "Accelerated Reader" system being implemented at our school. Basically, it was a online program where you would be able to take tests on books once you have read them, and each book had a certain amount of points based on its difficulty and length. Every semester, you needed to have a certain amount of points in order to get an A in English, and I always made sure too reach the point goal every year. My parents are the main reason of my success, and I will be forever thankful for the books they made me read and also for my success of…

In the Adler and Van Doren’s essay titled “The Activity and Art of Reading,” we are asked to respond to the conclusion that a teacher can help the students, but the student “must do the learning.” His argument, for me, seems to be a bit difficult to follow and yet I found myself nodding my head at the same time. I am not in total agreement, but with my best efforts I am trying to understand, in full, the context which he communicated to his audience. Having been a former helicopter instructor myself, there were numerous similarities between the attitudes he had with his students and the attitude I had with mine; particularly with respect to a student’s ability to learn.…

    The Reader

n part II, chapter eight of Bernhard Schlink's The Reader, the first-person narrator Michael describes reading the account written by a concentration camp who had survived along with her mother, the soul survivors in a large group of women who were being marched away from the camp. He says, "the book...creates distance. It does not invite one to identify with it and makes no one sympathetic..." The same could be said of The Reader. The book is written in such a way as to distance one from the characters. It prevents people from sympathizing with Hanna or Michael or anyone else, taking a sort of detached viewpoint from their problems. This can be paralleled to the efforts of the German people towards Vergangenheitsbewältigung, or "coping with the past." In coping with Germany's Nazi history, the Germans attempted to distance themselves from it and the moral implications it presented. They tried to understand it without involving themselves in it, since involving themselves could implicate them. The one person in the book who cannot distance herself, Hanna, is still unsympathetic because everyone else distances themselves from her, making it impossible to sympathize with any aspect of her plight. Hanna is symbolic of German history in this respect.…
