I would like to start of by giving a charachrerization of carl and thereafter a discription of the relationsship between him and lilly.
Carl (our main character) is in his early forties. he's married to a teacher whom he is not in love with. he works as a reverend at a lutheran church and has recently lost a sister to cancer. he is 6 feet tall with pale eyes, light hair and angular features. he is quite self-conscious and has a hard time being intemate. in the start of the text carl seems like a pretty normal, clean cut guy. he's not particular good looking, doesn't like to take chances, and has no passion for his wife. he seems a bit borring and ordinary but sometimes you just need to find the right person to extract the lessordinary out of you. that is exactly what happens to Carl.
Carl has a very strong developement of character during this story and lily is at the bottom of it.in the start of the text you are imediatly introduced to lilly whom he falls head over heals for. they start an affair as they are both living in unhappy marriages. this isn't just lust, he want's to keep her safe, want's to protect her even though he has no control over that. she brings out parts of him that he hasn't felt in a while. for example he holds her and after they've been intimate. a very simple gesture, but a level of intemasy non the less that he has had trouble expressing in the past. she makes him forget about his
