Many of the Cubans did not want to be under Spanish rule, therefore causing Cubans to leave to Florida and other parts of the United States. Although many left to other stated Cubans always remained loyal to their home in Cuba. Jose Marti, who was a Cuban writer dedicated his time to Cuba fight for independence from Spain. Jose Marti became the leader of the revolution, but sadly was killed when he returned to Cuba to fight. After the death of Jose Marti, Tomas Estrada Palma became leader who later became President of Cuba. Later in the year 1898, the U.S. participated in the war to help protect Cuba’s citizens. The War lasted only a couple months and soon ended when Spain signed the peace treaty which gave the U.S. control of Cuba and Puerto Rico. However, Cuba instead of becoming territory of the U.S it became an independent country. The U.S. took over Puerto Rico when they won a war. Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain as well just like Cuba.
