October 4, 1957 Soviet R-7 worldwide airborne missile launched Sputnik, it’s the world’s first false satellite and the first man-made item to be placed into the Earth’s orbit. The launch came as a surprise toward most Americans. Then in 1958 the USA launched their own satellite “Explorer I.” President Eisenhower produced two national security-oriented space programs at the same time as NASA’s program. The first was initiated by the US Air Force, it gave its self to abuse the military ability of space. The second program was introduced by the Central Intelligence Agency. The Air Force and the new association called the renaissance a code name which was named “Corona.” This would use orbiting satellites which …show more content…
NASA’s engineers sent a smaller cone shaped capsule much lighter than Vostok, the way they tested this was with chimpanzees. They held the final test on March 1961 before the Soviets were able to go on with Gagarin’s launch. Then on May 5 astronaut Alan Shepard became the first man in space but unfortunately not to orbit. Later that May President John F. Kennedy made a public claim that the USA would be the first to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. February 1962 John Glenn became the first American to orbit earth. By years end the basis of NASA’s lunar landing …show more content…
Then in January 1967 Apollo hit a bump in the road when three astronauts were killed by their spacecraft when it caught fire during the time they were at launch. December 1968 we saw the launch of Apollo 8 it was the first manned launch to orbit the moon that was from NASA’s large launch facility it was on Merritt Island which is close to Cape Canaveral FL. Finally on July 16 1969 the US astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were a part of the Apollo 11 mission to land on the moon. Then successfully landing on July 20. Neil became the first man to walk on the moon. His famous words were “One small step for man and, one giant leap for mankind.” By landing on the moon the USA effectively “won” the space race that had begun with Sputnik’s launch to the moon on their part soviets made four failed attempts of the lunar landing project including a launch pad explosion in 1969. From the beginning to the end the American’s attention was captured by the space race and the various developments of the USA and the Soviets. This tragic time was encouraged by the medium of TV. Astronauts became known as the American heroes and the Soviets were known as the so called villains because of their huge relentless efforts to try to surpass America and to prove
