How can complete opposites of people also have many similarities? How can a law breaking guy have anything similar to a law-abiding person? In most stories this is highly unlikely. However, in S.E Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, two characters have these differences. Dally Winston and Johnny Cade are similar because they both have abusive parents and they both care about one another. On the other hand they have opposite personalities and have different opinions on the law. Therefore, Dally Winston and Johnny Cade are very similar yet completely different. For example, Ponyboy and Dally are with Johnny at the hospital when he dies. When Dally realizes that Johnny is dead he storms off. Ponyboy tells the gang what happens then Ponyboy realizes something; “And then I knew. Johnny was the only thing that Dally loves. And now Johnny was gone” (152). Dally only cared about Johnny because Johnny is going through similar things that Dally went through. Johnny has abusive parents like Dally does. He also has a bad beating from the Socs. and Dally has also experienced beatings. Since Johnny has no one that cares for him Dally takes over and really cares about Johnny. Likewise, Johnny looks up to Dally. Johnny thinks that Dally is his hero. Dally, Ponyboy, and Johnny are at the drive-in with Cherry and Marcia. Dally is being rude to Cherry and Johnny tells him to knock it off. Dally storms out of the drive-in. Ponyboy thinks to himself “Johnny worshiped the ground Dallas walked on, and I never heard Johnny talk back to anyone, much less his hero” (34). Johnny worships Dally because he is not afraid of anything unlike Johnny. Dally fights in fights all the time and Johnny does not he only gets beaten up in fights.
