I really enjoyed reading David Jacobsen's "Reflection: Growing-Up Grown" not only for the sincerity of it, but also with just how much I was able to relate to it. This reading really did bring out an emotional reaction, with his expressing the difficulties of being a Latino in America, and the love he and his mother had despite all the odds. I think this reading was intended towards a younger demographic, mainly first generation children (like myself) who know far too well what it is like growing up grown, and to inspire them (me) to be the change. Grit can be defined as the perseverance of and passion for long term goals with two main factors to be considered: consistency of interests and perseverance of effort. (Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews and Kelly., 2007) In our study we are examining psychological grit and how grit relates to personality, through examining neuroticism, conscientiousness and extroversion, also how grit relates to academic intelligence through vocabulary and problem solving tests. Duckworth et al. (2007) mention the results of (Gottfredson, 1997; Hartigan and Wigdor, 1989), that intelligence, or IQ is the best predictor for achievement. Due to its purpose, the military has always been known to produce quality leaders. From George Washington to John F. Kennedy, the list goes on and on. The military’s rich history has afforded scholars the opportunity to dissect how leadership is developed in the military. From this Theories of Personality course, I have learned many concepts that I can apply to my life and would help me in my future career. I really enjoyed the chapter on personality disorders. I find it interesting that there are various types of personality disorders that surround me on a daily basis and not being aware of them. The three types of personalities are distinguished by Cluster A (weird); Cluster B (wild); Cluster C (worried). The one that I am most intrigued by is the wild cluster. Cluster B is called the dramatic, emotional, and erratic cluster. Some personality disorders associated with it are antisocial, narcissistic, borderline, and histrionic. Between these disorders, I became most interested in in borderline and histrionic. I have encountered some individuals with this type of personality disorder before and now I can diagnose them. My previous relationship, I believe that my ex was in between borderline and histrionic.
