The Perks of Life
“I can see it. This one moment when you know you're not a sad story. You are alive. And you stand up and see the lights on the buildings and everything that makes you wonder. You're listening to that song on that drive with the people you love most in this world. Just in this moment, I swear...We are infinite.” This quote is from Charlie, in the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. This movie is about a lonely boy who finds himself and his friends. Charlie is a freshman his friends, Patrick and Sam, who are seniors, take him in and show him there is much more to life than meets the eye. Throughout the movie the viewer witness struggles, the growing of characters and the shocking ending, which all lead to the conclusion. Even though you may be going through struggles and growing along the way you are not alone.
Charlie comes home from a night with his friends and hears arguing from Candace’s (his sister) room, as he peeks inside, ponytail Derrick’s hand smacks across Candace’s face. This conflict made Charlie wonder why women especially, let others treat them awfully. After Craig told Sam he was cheating on her throughout their whole relationship; Sam asked “Why do I and everyone I love pick people who treat us like we're nothing? “And Charlie replied with “We accept the love that we think we deserve.” This quote reflects that the younger age struggles with relationships and Charlie’s confusion with relationships.
In the beginning of the movie Charlie is quiet and a bit of a loner, then he meets Patrick, Sam and their friends and he really starts to come out of his shell. Charlie started to participate in life instead of watch it go by. When Mary-Elizabeth asked Charlie about high school his reply was “High school? Bullshit. The cafeteria is called the Nutrition Center; people wear their letter jackets even when it's 98 degrees outside. Also, why do they give out

Charlie tends to exclude himself from others, and not socialize with bountiful amounts of people. These two attributes of his personality influence others to believe that he is a trustworthy individual. “Then, he walked up, patted my shoulder, and said, “This is our little secret, okay, champ?” (17). This quotation spoken by Charlie’s father reveals that people seem to trust Charlie due to his personality type. Charlie’s actions also depicted his sense of trustworthiness. “But I would be lying. The truth is that when Patrick dared me, I knew that if I kissed Mary Elizabeth, I would be lying to everyone” (135). In this quotation it is evident that Charlie choses truth over falsity, no matter the consequence. Charlie’s personality characteristics place him in the category of being a wallflower, which forces him to be a truthful…

Education is a crucial part of the decision making process that we use every day, whether it be something as simple as choosing what to wear or as complex as making life altering choices, one of which is date rape. If someone goes on a date that does not mean that they want to have sex with you, being on a date does not give you consent to have sex with the other individual. Because a person must give their verbal consent and they should have the choice whether or not they want to proceed with any act under their own will.…

For fear of being ridiculed, he tends to not speak up; this is seen on the very first day of high school in Mr. Anderson’s class. A lack of confidence leads to an excessive amount of built up anger. This is known as rumination, which can be considered a personality trait of Charlie. Right before the cafeteria fight, he had been experiencing a plethora of emotions regarding his friends not talking to him and having flashbacks to his aunt’s death. These built up emotions cause a catharsis in reaction to the violence taking place. Repressing the anger and witnessing a fight are both causes for Charlie becoming violent in the scene. Aggression of this type is considered hostile aggression for two reasons. The first reason is because it was triggered by anger, which was mentioned above and the goal of this anger was to harm the people hurting Patrick. The second reason is because it was impulsive and irrational. Charlie did not actually know what he was doing because he blacked out. His fight instinct kicked in causing him to act out irrationally to protect his friends. Prejudice against homosexuals is the reason the fight broke out, but this is not the only time or subject of prejudice in the movie.…

I don’t mean that he’s a bad guy because he’s not.” (48). “A Rose for Charlie” is just one of countless examples of why tribalism is extremely harmful in modern society. Back when humans were scrambling for resources, it was necessary to fear one’s surroundings (i.e. when survival wasn’t guaranteed, humans needed to be wary of the unknown), but with today’s accommodations and tricks to cheat death, there’s no need for people to hang on to their preconceived notions of how people should be and act. Unfortunately, that kind of instinctive reactionary attitude is exactly what killed any hope Charlie Howard had for any true security in his identity and life.…

In the beginning of the film, Charlie struggles with making friends in the first couple of days of his freshman year. Charlie adapts and interacts well with people and is able to make friends easily and quickly. Chbosky portrays this idea in the wide angle shot of the large crowd in the football game, when Charlie approached Patrick and says “Hey Patrick”. "Hey, you're in my shop class”, says Patrick. Eventually Charlie is told to sit next to him and they continue their friendly conversation and with time meets a girl named Sam. From then onwards they made good friends and was later introduced to more people. Chbosky highlights the fact that Charlie becomes easily able to seek a conversation with someone in front of a large crowd, from which then lead to an invitation to his first ever party. At the party Charlie became emotional after realising the fact that he was being noticed and appreciated by the group of his presence. Patrick raised his drink and asked everyone to do the same. “To Charlie” and the whole group said, “To Charlie". Chbosky shows in the wide shot angle of when Charlie was drinking his milkshake and sitting on a lower level than his two other friends, that he has become recognised by the group, being the centre of attention by being himself, he gains the trust of others and is told important secrets compared to his original life. Charlie demonstrates the benefits of being a wallflower…
