The Power of Sisters
Friends may come and go, but family will stay till the end. In Judi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper, she shows that nothing is stronger than the bond of sisterhood. The story begins with Kate getting cancer and Anna being born as the designer baby to be the donor for Kate. Anna is tired of living her life helping Kate and wants to be her own person and have control of her own body. She later files a lawsuit suing her parent for the rights to her own body. This novel shows that nothing is stronger than the bond of sisters through the characters, conflicts and symbols.
The characters show the bond that all sisters share. When Kate was diagnosed with cancer, Sara Fitzgerald immediately contacted her sister, Zanne, for help, proving that family and siblings are the ones that will always be there when in need. When Sara was little, she described Zanne as the one whom she “ran to when (she) got (her) first period; the one who helped (her) knit back (her) first broken heart … she was (her) built in best friend” (Picoult, 61). Sara’s sister, Zanne, helped Sara whenever she needed her no matter what it was. For example, Zanne helped Sara take care of her children whenever there was an issue regarding Kate. Sara respects Zanne not only as a sister, but also a best friend who will always be there for her. Furthermore, Anna and Kate are another example of sisterly bond. Ever since Anna was born, she helped and encouraged Kate to stay strong and fight the cancer, supporting Kate as her sister and friend. They show a strong connection towards each other which is shown when Anna says that “Kate and I are Siamese twins, you just can’t see the spot where we are connected” (Picoult, 92). Kate literally has Anna’s blood in her veins, and because of that, they are connected in ways no other sisters are. Anna is the only thing keeping Kate alive.
