The Pro-Life Movement

For me, religion is a fascinating institution to examine in the context of women’s rights and feminism. Growing up in a liberal-leaning Conservative Jewish synagogue; I have not been raised with the same religious ideology as those who have been raised Christian, the dominant religion in our country. Though it may not be the most creative choice of website for this paper, for me, the Family Research Council (FRC) is my first true investigation into a pro-life, Christian organization. The pro-life movement, as a whole, is one of great interest to me. Not the kind of interest that entices me to join or subscribe to their beliefs, rather, I am interested in the use of religion and religious ideology as a justification of denying women the right
to choose. The title of this organization, Family Research Council, was the most intriguing for me, as the words “research council” imply greater credibility than is warranted. Family Research Council is an American conservative Christian organization that opposes abortion, homosexuality, and comprehensive sex education, among other things. The website includes an issues tab, a daily radio program , a “newsroom” tab, an about section, and a place to donate. The website also includes a “more” section, where events, merchandise, and blogs can be accessed. Under their “about” section, their vision statement reads, “Family Research Council’s vision is a culture in which all human life is valued, families flourish, and religious liberty thrives” (frc.org/mission-statement). To pursue this vision, FRC has a mission for their organization, which states that, “Family Research Council’s mission is to advance faith, family, and freedom in public policy and the culture from a Christian worldview” (frc.org/mission-statement). To complete their vision and mission statements, under their “issues” tab, their statements on life, marriage and family, and religious liberty are articulated, accompanied by links to further reading and resources.
