Since the beginning of 2018 there has been 18 mass shootings. This is approximately 3 mass shooting per week. With more gun control laws established there would be less mass shooting in the United States. The most recent shooting in the United States occurred in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and this shooting claimed the lives of 17 people and wounded 15 more (Time). In this instance, the person handling the weapon was 19 year old Nikolas Cruz and he showed multiple signs that he wanted to attempt a shooting. The shooter was an expelled student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and on his social media page he had displayed different weapons as well as stated that he would like to commit a mass shooting. Cruz was also diagnosed with autism and had temper issues. In 2017, one of the most deadly shooting occurred in Route 91 Harvest Music Festival that left 58 people dead and more than 500 people injured. The shooter was 64 year old Stephen Paddox and he shot more than 1,100 rounds out of the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. The shooter acted alone and he had dozens of guns in the hotel room. It is also believed at this individual had suffered through bipolar disorder and was a germaphobe. He was not able to be brought in to be questioned because he died by a self inflicted wound. Of the different ways people have died of suicide most of these deaths were caused by firearms. Every suicide attempt without the involvement of a gun results in less than 10% deaths, but 90% of firearm suicide result in death. Every year more than 21,000 American died by firearm suicide that is equivalent to 58 deaths per day (Center For Disease Control and Prevention). In the United States, firearm suicide has increased and many of these suicide attempts occur in their individual household that have a gun. Access to a gun in a household triples the death rate and different states with high prevalence of guns are 4 times more likely to die of gun suicide, but responsible and safe storage of firearms can prevent suicide deaths among children and teens. Storing firearms apart from ammunition and storing it in a locked area can prevent and reduce deaths by gun suicide from children and teens. Study has also show that counseling for gun owners about firearm storage have improved the likelihood of safe gun storage. The ERPOs or Extreme Risk Protection Orders have allowed the petition to remove firearms from an individuals that may cause harm to themselves or others. For example, Connecticut has a version of this law in place that has reduce the suicide rate in the area (Everytownresearch).
