There has been much debate among students and teachers over what the true purpose of the dress code is. The original dress code was created in 1969 to prevent students from protesting the Vietnam War by wearing black armbands. But there are those who wonder what the real purpose of the dress code is today, and whether or not it’s intentions are still the same.
Today our school prevents students from wearing skirts that are less than three inches above the knee, or tops that reveal any shoulder. Eighth grade Assistant Principal Lauren Gentene says that the purpose if the dress code is to create a good learning …show more content…
“My mom was asking me why I was wearing leggings, because it's getting hot outside, and you still have to wear leggings,” Holleran said. “If we’re all being honest here, your shoulder is skin. Your shoulder does not show anything inappropriate. It’s reasonable if they are wearing a really short skirt, but if you can’t see anything then I can’t see where it’s a problem. But shoulders showing? That skin.They should really make a change, at least the shoulder.”
Eighth grader Ethan Pellegrini said that the dress code’s purpose is to keep students focused and prevent distraction from inappropriate clothing.
“I think the purpose of the dress code is to make school more efficient so no one gets distracted and so people get more work done. [But] as long as you’re not wearing stuff that’s inappropriate, you’re fine. Both girls and boys can [be distracting]. If someone has a shirt that’s inappropriate then that could be distracting. They have that right out of school, but in school, they have to follow
