The Pursuit Of Happiness In American Society
The pursuit of happiness in American society means that you have to be making money. We pursue money and liken it to happiness. We assume that the more of it we have, the happier that we will be. Unfortunately, this is not the case. If you take a moment to look a millionare and billionares they are just as unhappy if not moreso. This I believe is because the old adage is correct. Money cannot buy happieness. This is because if we base how happy we are on how much money we have we will always be worried about losing money.

Therefore how can we achieve happiness? We have to look within ourselves. Taking a good long look at what makes us happy and how we can be happy. Money can't buy happiness but it can help buy security. Home security, vehicle security, food security, and other types of nessesities that we need to exist in our every day lives. This type of security automatically increases our happieness. If you are secure in your life you in turn will have less stress and by having less stress you will be much happier in your life.

When you live an angry life and are angry at everything and seek to live your life fighting every day it makes you stressed out. It in turn makes you age, hurts your relationships with friends, family and loved ones. Stress puts undue hardships on not only your physical body, but your mental body as well. Your mental health suffers and you may become a victim of migraines, heart problems, high blood pressure, and a variety of other

The true contents of happiness are stated in the article “A Formula for Happiness” by Arthur C. Brooks, the president of the American Enterprise Institute. Brooks states that people realize life and view happiness depending on genes, one-time events and basic values: faith, family, community and work. He pays special attention to the last one. According to Brooks, meaningful work and success considered as passion can make people happier. Brooks cites as an example Franklin D. Roosevelt’s words: “Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money;…

Although there will always be those who say money cannot buy happiness, money can lead to personal satisfaction, which in the end leads to happiness. Happiness can be created through the things that one owns, also by what they have compared to others around them. As said in the article, “The Happiness of Pursuit,” one helps obtain happiness because “money can boost happiness if it allows people to obtain more of the things they need and desire” (qtd. in Kluger). This is proven through the fact that when people get what they want, or get more of the things they enjoy, then they become happy, and money can be used to get those things. It can also be argued that based on the amount of money one makes, their happiness can either be increased or decreased. In an article from the Time Magazine, according to Belinda Luscombe, “the more [people make], the more they felt their life was going well.” If it is true that the more money people make, and the better they feel pertaining to how their life is going, then they will definitely be happier depending on their monetary wealth. With the constant arguing back and forth of people as to whether money makes people happy, sad, or has no affect, it is apparent that money does affect people’s lives. Money can both help people get what they want, also help make their lives feel as if they are going well, which are both…

McMahon writes about Americans and their pursuit to be happy. The holiday season start off with Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year. Thomas Carlyle once said, “ ‘Happiness our being’s end and aim’ is at bottom, if we will count well, not yet two centuries old in the world” (960). In Ron Carlson’s “The Ordinary Son.” Reed discovers that what he might want in life is different than how his family lives. Reed’s family isn’t your typical scenario. His family is a “famous family,” a group of geniuses not known by their family’s last name but by each individual. The children even called their parents by their first names. They all had their own names, they were known by who they are not by the traditional way of saying, “Oh they are the Landers family.” Geniuses lived not in a typical way of life. They were so focused on making the next big thing, that they never even spent family time together. Their house wasn’t full of fancy decorations, but actually quiet empty. They didn’t even have a dinner table. Geniuses weren’t social lights either, they never had people come over; they didn’t keep up with all the tech savvy stuff either. They had no television or telephone. It was a genius household and it wasn’t to be diminished by electronic gismos.…

Our definition of happiness is very much influenced by the kind of society we live or grew up in, our life experiences, goals we pursue in life and our level of education. This is why the topic (happiness) is very controversial because it’s hard to change people’s beliefs. I think though that happiness depends on other things like family and friends, doing the things you love, etc., and not money or material things. Having people around you who love you unconditionally, share your beliefs, culture, are social, and care for each other is a recipe for happiness. Likewise, playing a sport you are passionate about (soccer, basketball, pool, dancing, and so forth) or meditating has brought happiness to some people as well. “The chemical…
