According to page 67, “He remembered the pain that the Chief Elder called indescribable that would come with his training.” The Chief Elder stated that the pain Jonas will experience is so bad, so horrific, mentally and physically, that it is undescribable even by the intensely precise language of Jonas’s community. According to page 153, “That night Jonas was [obligated] to flee. According to page 64, “They chose a previous receiver, and he failed.” The job as receiver is so stressful and dangerous, especially at such young age, that 2 receivers in a row have given up, likewise so would the third. According to page 126, “In his mind, Jonas saw again the face of the boy who had lain dying in a field and had begged him for water. He had a sudden choking feeling, as if it were more difficult to breathe.” Not just does Jonas have to experience the memories, and in the long run the memories’ pain is permanent, he relives them over and over, continuing to suffer, unless he leaves. The pain is so mentally difficult to overcome that it leads Jonas forget everything he once knew as fun, and now is able to relate almost any innocent, fun, game to a memory of pain, or suffering. These feelings are all ones that his friends do not understand. If he were to try to explain them, they would not be able to comprehend the words his friends have never known them to mean anything. This makes Jonas the only one who understands the true meaning of things, and that no one else can feel the way he feels, even if they tried.
