Critically evaluate McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. How far is it applicable to management and employee motivation in contemporary Chinese organizations?
That motivation and improving profits are gradually recognized as challenges for managers in this economy sustained developing world. In order to pull through, the strategy that improving level of wage for worker is utilized frequently, but the importance of this strategy is arguably overstated. In 1960s Douglas McGregor develops human motivation theory using concept of Theory X and Theory Y to analyse this issue. According to McGregor(2000), Theory X tends to believe that human is innately lazy, they will postpone accomplishing task if possible and are not willing to take responsibility, therefore they need to be heavily supervised and controlled by rewarding and blaming. Whilst the assumption of Theory Y is that employees are self-controlled and ambitious, they not only accept the responsibility but enjoy the duties which can satisfy their physical and mental needs. As a result, internal control can be another way to explore the potential and managers should effort to guide self-direction for employees. Although Theory X provides a directly and easily conducted method, it consist practical flaws, method provided by Theory Y is a more valuable for creating a more efficient and trust climate to motivate employees and its assumptions reflect the management of contemporary China more precisely.
