The first mention of bread is when God is telling Adam of his punishment for eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, He tells Adam that “in the sweat of your face you shall eat bread til you return to the ground” (Gn 3:19). Bread is purely a thing necessary for survival. It is a human thing. Bread is such a basic food that it is what is usually given from one person to another, like when the three men come to Abraham. She tells him that “'I have no thing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a pitcher, and now I am gathering a couple of sticks, that I might go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.' And Elijah said to her, 'Fear not; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake and bring it to me, and afterwards make for yourself and for your son. For thus says the Lord God of Israel. ‘The jar of meal shall not be spent, jug of oil shall not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.” (1 Kgs 17:11-14). This happened during a great drought, and despite what the widow thinks: that after using the last of her meal and oil, she and her son will die, she listens to Elijah and makes a cake for him. God multiplies her resources so there will be enough for them to eat until the drought ends. After this her son dies, and Elijah raises him from the dead. Jesus multiples the fish and loaves to feed the crowd. “Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves…the disciples gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. (Mt 14:19-21) Jesus does this so the people will not have to go to find food, instead they can stay and listen to him. It is important to note Jesus did not feed 5,000 people, he fed 5,000 men, and those mens’ wives, and children. This is a big miracle that effected a lot of people. They were not just fed food, they all got to listen to Jesus speak. These people foreshadow the millions of people who will receive the Eucharist from the successors of the
