The Shawl
*Dinner Table Scene*
C- (Reading newspaper, cuts herself) What the *bleep*
S- (Walks into room) Hey dad I have some homework that I need some help with, do you think that you can help me?
C- I guess
S- Okay well we are going over scientific notation, and significant figures
C- Well (states the rules for sig figs) Zeros may or may not be significant. They are significant when between nonzero digits, and when at the end of a number that includes a decimal point. They are not significant when before the first nonzero digit, and when at the end of a number without a decimal point. Now for nonzero digits. All nonzero digits in a number are considered significant. For example 4.013 has four sig figs. 900.2 has four sig figs.
SA- Don’t listen to your father he knows nothing. (She then explains scientific notation)
S- I can’t even concentrate with that awful smell!
C- That would be your mothers cooking.. Did you just notice that?
SA- Your one to talk you can’t even make cereal!
C- Your mom can’t make cereal
SA- Ohhh you wanna talk about mamas huh?
C- *Rolls eyes*anyways, heather do you get it?
S- No not really
C- Well that’s because you get your intelligence from your mom
SA- But she’s adopted
S- *goes to the corner and cries*
*Dart Scene*
C- y'all ready for a family game night?
SA- I suppose it will help release tension, Heather you're up for it
C- It will help you with your precision and accuracy because you suck so bad
(Explains precision and accuracy)
*heather throws all three darts and misses*
SA- Well you're accurate at sucking but at least you’re precise

When adding or subtracting quantities, the number of significant figures is rounded off to the same decimal place as the least precise piece of data. For example, when subtracting 23.385 cm from 18472.3952 cm, the answer will be rounded to the third decimal place, leaving our answer to be 18449.010 cm. It is important to note that defined quantities, such as the number of people at a table, or minutes in an hour, are not subjected to the rules of significant figures because they would not fall victim to erroneous measurements.…

    Black Robe

Robert Kilker concludes that though Black Robe “may at times pretend to equalize its perspectives of the French and Algonquins . . . it always recovers that balance, replacing it with a Eurocentric hierarchy.” I felt just the opposite. For me, Black Robe was based around Chomina, a true hero. Chomina is a strong character who stands firm in his beliefs but respects the beliefs of others, which is why he is the essence of the movie. As the movie progresses, the characters change, especially Laforgue, who comes to question his very identity as a Christian. Chomina changes the least, however, and emerges as the film’s most powerful character. His key trait is his ability to establish relationships that are founded on respect. Chomina accepts outsiders, while staying true to his own culture. He demonstrates how two cultures can co-exist, but not assimilate into one culture or the other. The basis for this co-existence is respect – a respect that begins in respect for himself and spreads to respect for his tribe and respect for other cultures.…

“Annuka told me they believe that in the forest at night the dead can see. The souls of men hunt the souls of animals,” said Daniel in the 1991 film, Black Robe. Based in the 17th century, Black Robe follows a French Jesuit priest (Father LaForgue) and a fellow companion through Quebec’s wilderness during the peak of the harsh winter months. Their escorts, the Algonquin native tribe, make attempts to lead them to a Christian mission in a Huron village too which Father LaForgue will become head priest and manage the settlement. Along the way, however, the young Priest hurtles multiple obstacles in both his faith, and with the native people. The struggle between what the natives already believe, and what the French, specifically Father LaForgue, are trying to make them understand is the cause to most the conflict, betrayal, and inevitable death in the film.…

    Beyond the Burqa

The role of the Burqa is to conceal women’s bodies and/or face says Chris Moore whom wrote The Buirqa – Islamic or Culture?. Islamic men believe that women should wear the burqa as a sign of respect and loyalty to the family but where did they get this idea? Moore says many people would think it is Islamic religion but you can’t really say that and be completely accurate. The reason being is because of these facts Moore states he says that is you read the Quran ( the Muslim Bible) it doesn’t gives that as one of the laws that women specifically have to follow. Rather it says that both men and women should follow a dress code but does in fact say that women have to cover their chest, lengthen their garments to conceal their body as respect for themselves and for both men and women should wear the most important garment of all which is righteousness and modest conduct. Nowhere does it mention or require women to wear such garments as a burqa I feel that Quran just wants women in Muslim community to carry themselves in a respectable manner in society. With the information I got from the passage is that the only reason women have to wear the burqa is because men want to feel as if they have power and control over the women in their society I also feel that women should stand up for each other and make a change to stop this in their culture.…

Rashomon, by Ryunosaki Akutaguya provides great insight into the psychological discord that the Japanese culture was undergoing in the early part of the twentieth century. Japan was in the throes of a societal transformation, from a traditional, religious-based society, to a newly adopted weternized culture. Japan was rapidly assimilating industrial and scientific techniques and philosophies that were in conflict with, and were replacing traditional ways of life. Akutaguwa illustrates this with his opening two paragraphs where he shows the once proud and majestic Rashomon Gate, a religious monument, abandoned and in ruins. As we enter the story, it is raining, (symbolic of transformation or rebirth) and the author describes the city of Kyoto having undergone a series of calamities; earthquakes, fires and tornadoes which have left Kyoto in a state of decline. This image is put side by side with the Samurai’s servant, whose master, once prosperous, is wealthy no longer. The servant, therefore, has been discharged and is out on the street. Psychologically, the imagery of the first two paragraphs is important. The religious artifacts, once richly decorated with gold and silver, no longer proudly represent old Japan. The gold and silver has “worn off” and the statues, which themselves represent the collectivist mindset and values, are being chopped up and “sold” as firewood. This represents a westernized psychological mindset that everything is for sale, including the Japanese people’s once- idealized values. The Rashomon itself is now a repository for the Kyoto dead, symbolically, those who cannot adapt to the new psychology and values taking over Japan.…
