The Very Personal Another perspective—a poignant one at that—about the shortcomings of Abstinence–Only comes from Elizabeth Smart, the young woman who made headlines after being abducted for nine months at age 14. At a Johns Hopkins University forum on human trafficking, Smart (who was raped repeatedly by her abductors) spoke out against the abstinence-only education she received as a child, suggesting that it deterred her from escaping her captors. She said that abstinence-only education makes rape victims feel “so dirty” and “so filthy.” In her school she was taught that “women who engage in pre-marital sex are like chewed pieces of gum that nobody wants to chew again.” Well, that’s terrible. No one should ever say that. But for me, I thought, ‘I’m that chewed-up piece of gum.’ Nobody re-chews a piece of gum. You throw it away. And that’s how easy it is to feel you no longer have worth. Your life no longer has value. As a result, Smart said that she had the feeling like “who would ever want me now? I’m worthless. I understand so easily … why someone wouldn’t run because of that alone,” said Smart. “Can you imagine turning around and going back into society where you’re no longer of value?” Smart emphasized that children should be taught that they will always have value …show more content…
It seems that the rational is based upon a study which found a Heritage Keepers Abstinence-Only Curriculum delayed sexual activity for some students. After a year of the program, the percentage of students who reported to be “sexual experienced” increased from 29 to 33 percent. But that was better than the control group, where the numbers jumped from 29 to 43 percent.     In Limbaugh’s exert, he attempts to refute the opposition argument that young people will inevitably have sex and need condoms. Limbaugh then provides readers with a rhetorical example with a boy who tries to sleep with a girl using a condom he got from the school. This is intended to demonstrate his belief that schools distribution of condoms will promote teenagers to have sex. He then provides his definition of gender sex roles. He explains that men are aggressors, while females are defenseless and need protection. Limbaugh then makes the claim that sex has negative consequences, using Magic Johnson to support his claim. He also goes on to say that the fact that risky sex can lead to AIDs or other harmful diseases; it is these consequences that need to be taught to teens.     My largest issue with this topic is the way that it demonizes sex as impure or unnatural. Young people are taught that premarital sex is wrong, but this begs the question what is defined as sex? Is it simply vaginal-penile sex? Are lesbians and homosexual men then virgins? Is masturbation an equitable sin to premarital sex? Abstinence only prevention does not have a universal answer to these questions. This form of sexual education reeks of traditional Christian values which many people do not prescribe to. The Purity Myth highlights the political reasons behind abstinence only sex education. This type of education promotes traditional gender roles and attempts to restore the gender order which keeps women submissive. Taxpayers are paying for abstinence centered sexual education, which is rooted in Christianity. Essentially the separation of church and state is being ignored. Science has proved that teaching abstinence only sex education is ineffective because it highlights the moral and health dangers of vaginal sex, while ignoring the risks of oral and anal sex. They used tactics like religion and traditional beliefs to send the message that expressing sexual behavior brings shame to everyone around them (Krueger). Those programs do not teach teens about protection nor ways for them to be in control of their health.     Comprehensive Sexual Education What has happened to today’s society that we are opposed to condoms because they might entice sex? When has allowing our youth to practice unsafe sex over safe sex been okay? We often think because we supply kids with condoms, birth control, and talks, that we are giving them permission to have sex, when in fact we are merely trying to protect them from STDs and pregnancy. We do not need to scare kids, but we do need to provide them with information about safe sex practices and what can happen if they do plan to explore their sexual urge. Facts are the most important thing we can offer those select few of youth who wish to engage in sex. Since when has providing information been a bad thing? Shouldn’t the youth know what they are doing and what can happen before they do it? Most schools and education environments that do encourage any sort of sexual education, teach kids to “just say no”. The one main problem with this “abstinence only” education is that it denies those who do say “yes” information, instead of providing other acceptable options other than abstinence. Throughout time, ratings have shown that teaching the abstinence only education doesn’t affect the rates at which teenagers decide to have sex. When they are told by teachers that abstinence is the only way that they will not get a STD, they know they are being lied to or misled.
