I remember it just like it was yesterday, the stamp act. It was July if 1765. My parents and I was gathered around the kitchen table eating dinner. Then a tall man came banging on the door, like we owned him something. My dad rushed over to the door, and he peeked through the peep hole on the door. When he opened the door I was told to go upstairs in my room. I jolted up the stairs, skipping every other one, to look out my window. There was a faint sound in the distance when I opened my bedroom door. I had to squint, because I didn't have my new pair of glasses on. I didnt see much but I did see a bunch of flames going toward the Mickealson's house, they were the new tax collectors in town. About 10 minutes later, my mom came up in my room and said I could go back down to finish eating dinner. My seat was fairly cold when I sat in it. As I glanced around, I asked mother where father went. She simply said that he had to go to his black smith buisness real quick because a tall man with a mustache broke into his shop.

When George Grenville tightened up the administration of the colonial customs service and revised the rates which was “to make them produce a revenue, he knew that he was only beginning, that the colonies could and should contribute more to the cost of their defense. During the summer of 1763 he had already begun to consider the possibility of a stamp tax”. One example out of many came in March of 1765 when Parliament imposed the Stamp Act on the Northern American colonies. This act placed a tax on all printed paper the colonies used in order to help pay the British debt from war. This led to the second event of political significance that occurred in Federal Hall: the Stamp Act Congress. The Stamp Act Congress was held between October 7 and 25, 1765 to protest “taxation without representation”. The meeting was the first gathering of twenty-seven elected representatives from nine different American colonies that came together to protest British taxation. The colonists showed British Parliament that they were able to create a strong opposition. The meeting resulted in the Declaration of Rights and Grievances, which stated that there should be “no taxes imposed on Colonists without their consent or receive a tax from from a body which they have no representative in” (What was the Stamp Act Congress? Summary of 1765 Stamp Act Congress). The Stamp Act Congress created a newborn sense of unity among the colonists—and they realized much could be attained by working together. The Stamp Act Congress is now “generally viewed as one of the first organized and coordinated political actions of the American Revolution” (Stamp Act Congress 2015). It is significant to American politics as it played a “major role [in] enabling the organized colonial resistance that led to the American Revolution in 1775” (Stamp Act Congress 2015), and conclusively, American…

After developing the colonies, many members of these colonial societies associated themselves with being American and not fully English. As Britain tries to keep the colonies strictly under its control, America was having an identity crisis as to whether they had to follow the exact ruling of Britain. The colonies struggled to define exactly who they were and how supportive they were of each other. With the Declaration Act in 1766, colonies were defining exactly where they stood with Britain, more independent than the motherland had hoped, and how the colonies would work together, unified for the same cause. The colonies all agreed that representatives of the people are a necessity in the government, but the relationship to England and the…
