Art can be a very important way of knowing/providing personal and collective knowledge. Art does not just affect us, it informs us. Like all information, art can be used to build a picture of the world beyond the one that we interact with everyday. Art does this is by giving us a kind of conceptual knowledge, knowledge about our own personal concepts. However, art can be perceived as a form that is a false way of knowing, as Picasso described, “Art as a lie that brings us nearer to the truth.” Meaning art is a lie because it expresses one's personal imagination and creativity. For example take Vincent van Gogh’s painting of “The Starry Night”, it depicts the view from a east-facing window of his asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, however, with an addition of an idealized village. This painting follows Picasso’s definition as with the addition of the idealized village it is a lie as such a village did not exist, but it brings the artist as well as the observers nearer to the truth that is the emotion underlying in the painting. This lie within the painting though not what is truly there, lead to the painting that is so iconic today. Starry Night also furthers that art is a form of a lie as Starry Night was based off of a series of sketches that Vincent van Gogh had from his time spent at the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
