The Tell-Tale Heart Suspense Essay
The Tell-Tale Heart suspense essay
In the story the tell-tale heart Poe uses the first person narrative to create the suspense and tension making the reader wanting to find out more about what is going on and he uses literary devices to build this tension keeping the reader in suspense.
In the story Poe uses a lot of descriptive language when describing both things and events, Poe states “For a whole hour I did not move a muscle, and in the meantime I did not hear him lie down.” Poe also states that “I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between the scaling’s. I then replaced the boards so cleverly, so cunningly, that no human eye-even his- could have detected anything wrong. There was nothing to wash out-no stain of any kind – no bloodspot whatever. I had been too wary for that. A tub had caught all- ha! Ha!” This helps the reader imagine what is going on because of the good detailed description.
Another way Poe creates suspense is the use of repetition that he uses For example “I moved it slowly- very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man’s sleep.” Another example of repetition would be “I undid the lantern cautiously- oh, so cautiously-cautiously (for the hinges creaked) - I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye.” The use of repetition creates the tension to the reader and shows he had to be very calm and quiet.
Poe also uses the ideal of time (clocks) as a suspense to the readers for example “a watch’s minute hand moves quicker than mine did.” The ideal of time creates suspense and shows the effect of how the emotion in the story is, for example “when I had an end of these labours, it was four o’clock- still dark as midnight. As the bell sounded the hour, there came a knocking at the street door.”
In the story Poe uses a first person narrative as the narrator and because of that it bring suspense to readers, he carefully portrays his words in such manner that it

Edgar Allan Poe uses suspense in his story, “The Tell-Tale Heart” when the old man the narrator is trying to kill wakes up and does not go back to sleep. “I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in the bed, crying out-“Who's there?” (Poe, 356). This tells you how he adds suspense because after this happened, they were just staying still for a while waiting for another sound to be made. Another use of suspense in the story is, “He was…

One thing he carries in his bag of tricks for creating suspense is making time stand still, so to speak. His writing will appear to be dragging on forever and you’ll feel as if the part you’re waiting for will never happen. Poe creates this illusion by describing every little detail going on in the current setting. For example in, “The Cask of Amontillado,” as they went further down the caverns, Poe describes every little detail in…

He practically started the story by using foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is a very interesting type of literary device. It gives out clues to the reader about the conclusion of the story. Usually it is the character of the story that gives out the clues but from time to time it may vary. Because foreshadowing usually comes in at the very beginning, you may not believe what the character tells you because you do not exactly know what kind of person he is, and if the character is some psychopath, obviously you are not going to believe him. Putting foreshadowing in the beginning of a story is an excellent way to start a story because that way it keeps the reader's attention at the beginning of the story. During the story, Edgar Allan Poe gave the reader much information and description, but you could tell that he also held back much information. For example, at the beginning of the story, the man told the reader that he loved the old man but hates the eye and believes the eye is evil. Normally the reader would think that all he want to do is to take out the old man's eye, but who would have ever knew that he was going to kill the old man, for the man never wronged him or given him an…

The setting and pacing in the 4th paragraph come together to create suspense because of the way that the words were put and the words that were in the paragraph. In the paragraph it moves at a slow pace but goes into great detail about how he moved through the mans room and what he did in there. When he moves “very, very slowly [inside the room]”(poe pg 1) it builds suspense because that paragraph moves at the pace that he does. Since the paragraph moves at a slow speed it builds suspense because you don't know what could happen next. Since he repeats words it also builds suspense because when he moves in side the room he repeats cautiously and he goes into great detail about what he did cautiously.…
