In today’s world where athletes are role models, product spokespeople, involved with numerous charities and have to maintain a high level of athleticism in the sport they play, they need assistance with making the everyday decisions that affect their lives and that of their families. A sports agent has to have confidence and people skills because the tasks he/she encounters each and every day are widely varied. You may say to yourself, “Isn’t my job just to negotiate the best deal for my athlete? Once that’s done, my job is over for a year or two or until the next contract negotiation comes up.” Not so fast. There’s three keys roles a sports agent plays in the life of his/her athlete.
Role #1: Networker
You will need to be an expert networker for both you and your client. Because your salary is paid based on the salary of your client, you will most likely need multiple clients in order to make a successful living. You want to put yourself out there and network with those athletes in need of an agent or looking to make an agent change.
Additionally, you want to be networking for your client. How else do you think big-time athletes score endorsement contracts with major brands? Networking. That sports drink company needs to know your client loves their product and that he/she can help sell it!
