The strongest country at this time, was Great Britain who was very industrialized with land in both Africa and Asia. Great Britain at the time ruled over a quarter of the worlds land. Along with great Britain, France also owned large parts of land in Africa. Due to the large ownership of land by Great Britain and France, Germany became enraged, and encouraged to get land because of their nationalism in their country. The only problem was that there was not much land left for Germany, especially since Great Britain was so powerful with one quarter of all land. Many saw imperialism as a race for land between countries which caused rivalry between the nations. There were many land hungry countries who were fueled by nationalism. The deterioration of the Ottoman Empire also caused chaos, because it made land available to be imperialized. With all the land up for grabs, this led to more rivalry between the nations in Europe. The separation of the Ottoman Empire was an underlying cause of the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This was because those who were unpleased with the way they were being ruled wanted to gain independence. An alliance was a political or military agreement between two nations that made it so when one country in the alliance went to war, they were all involved in the war.. Alliances started out between just a couple countries, but then over time there were several countries in one alliance. The two main alliances were the Triple Alliance, and the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance contained Austria, Hungary, and Italy. The Triple Entente contained Russia, France, and Great Britain. Both alliances were both very powerful, while combining the power of all their nations. Alliances were typically made in secret, and not revealed to the public. This added more suspicion and tension to the war, because one nation could go against another nation that they thought was dependant on itself, but then ended up being apart of an alliance, then the nation is actually going against several countries on their own.
