The Thunderstorm
The Thunderstorm.

As the day dawned and the sun peeped through the clouds, I hurriedly jumped out of bed and awoke my sister. It was the perfect start to what promised to be a great day. Clear, blue skies greeted us and we were excited and full of joy for today was the day we were going on our long awaited trip to Maracas Beach.
As I ran downstairs I could smell the delicious aroma of curry. Mummy was just about to “chunkay” the pot. My mouth was watering already. Curry duck, dhal and rice was the selected menu for the day. “Oh gosh! Thank You Mummy! “I blurted out. “ You picked my favourite dish. Could this day be any more perfect! “I gushed. Soon we were all packing the car with our favourite beach toys and helping daddy pack the cooler with our favourite drinks. We were ready to go to the beach. Unfortunately, as soon as we were about to get into our car, the heavens opened up and a sudden torrential down pour of rain burst through the skies. As we reluctantly moved back into the house, I thought to myself this passing shower was not going to ruin my day. Suddenly, there was a loud clasp of thunder and as I looked out the window, bright lightning streaks lit up the sky. The clouds above were very overcast and threatening and the winds blew with great strength. Umbrellas were useless for they were blown away by the strong winds. As the winds blew fiercely the trees swayed.
My worst fears were coming through. As my sister and I leaned against the window pane praying for a miracle, the rains came down tapping hard against the windows and doors. The thunder above us roared louder. As I looked out the window I could see the rain. The raindrops were like slanting spears stabbing the earth. This was no “passing cloud.” We could see the drains gushing with water and the water level was rising with each passing minute.
Unfortunately, we heard a loud bang and suddenly the electricity was lost. The streets were completely flooded out also. Then, we got the

A Sound of Thunder is a great story written by Ray Bradbury, however, Nethergrave is an even better story written by Gloria Skurzynski. Though both of these stories are science fiction, I enjoyed reading Nethergrave more than Sound of Thunder, the story has more of a unique feature to it, seeing as it is not set in the future and most science fiction stories are set in the future like A Sound of Thunder. Also the imagery in Gloria’s story grabs my attention unlike in Sound of Thunder. Both of these stories are great at grabbing the readers attention as it grabbed mine.…

Later that morning, in the sunlit dining hall, breakfast was being severed. My group sat at the table we sat at the night before. As I started to eat my tater-tots , the events from yesterday filled my mind. My group went snorkeling, both day and night, I could still feel the cold water soak my wetsuit. I remembered that Mr. Lacey, our principal, announced that the school would be leaving today because of a storm. I was disappointed because I payed for three days instead of two,but at least I was having fun.…

Water started to drip from the ceiling as the cracks look as if they were cracking even more. We put a bucket to obtain the water and whenever it was full we would boil it or drop a water purification tablet to kill the germs and bacteria in it. The winds felt hard trying to break through the door. I prayed that the hurricane could be over with so that everything could be fine again and we waited praying as a family in unity. We were really worried about the food and water because we had almost finished more than three fourths of our food in three days. It was still morning, but all of a sudden the weather was bad. Thunder crackled and roared like nature itself was angry. It was gradually coming to me. As my parents watched the news in awe, I knew something unpleasant was about to happen. Then it happened, rain began to pour in stupendous amounts. Trees were rocking side to side as if they were in a church choir. I knew the electricity would not last long. We watched television while we still could, and there was basically an outrage. Gas prices were rising tremendously and lines were backed all the way to the highway. I must admit it was nothing like anything I have ever seen before. The south was basically in a panic. My parents told me of stories about how when they were young a similar storm also known as hurricane Camille ravaged the south.…

Everything was silent at first, as are most moment’s right before a major storm. People were roaming around, minding their own business and going about their days like nothing was wrong. It was quite clear most were trying to rush to get everything accomplished before the downpour, but no one knew how soon it would happen. Suddenly, as young eyes searched around the area for a treat for being a good boy during the trip, the wind suddenly picked up. Papers and leaves blew about, some flying in front of his face. This caused him to let go of the hand he was holding onto so he could rub at his eyes. He heard a voice, but the wind was too loud for him to hear over.…
