As the day dawned and the sun peeped through the clouds, I hurriedly jumped out of bed and awoke my sister. It was the perfect start to what promised to be a great day. Clear, blue skies greeted us and we were excited and full of joy for today was the day we were going on our long awaited trip to Maracas Beach.
As I ran downstairs I could smell the delicious aroma of curry. Mummy was just about to “chunkay” the pot. My mouth was watering already. Curry duck, dhal and rice was the selected menu for the day. “Oh gosh! Thank You Mummy! “I blurted out. “ You picked my favourite dish. Could this day be any more perfect! “I gushed. Soon we were all packing the car with our favourite beach toys and helping daddy pack the cooler with our favourite drinks. We were ready to go to the beach. Unfortunately, as soon as we were about to get into our car, the heavens opened up and a sudden torrential down pour of rain burst through the skies. As we reluctantly moved back into the house, I thought to myself this passing shower was not going to ruin my day. Suddenly, there was a loud clasp of thunder and as I looked out the window, bright lightning streaks lit up the sky. The clouds above were very overcast and threatening and the winds blew with great strength. Umbrellas were useless for they were blown away by the strong winds. As the winds blew fiercely the trees swayed.
My worst fears were coming through. As my sister and I leaned against the window pane praying for a miracle, the rains came down tapping hard against the windows and doors. The thunder above us roared louder. As I looked out the window I could see the rain. The raindrops were like slanting spears stabbing the earth. This was no “passing cloud.” We could see the drains gushing with water and the water level was rising with each passing minute.
