A supercharger can be defined as a device such as a blower or compressor for pressurizing the cabin of an airplane or for increasing the volume air charge of an internal combustion engine over that which would normally be drawn in through the pumping action of the pistons. (Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary) A supercharger is any device that pressurizes the air intake to above atmospheric pressure. Superchargers are powered mechanically by belt or chain drive from the engine crankshaft. Most are driven by an accessory belt that wraps around a pulley that connects to a drive gear. The drive gear rotates the compressor gear. The compressor gear squeezes air into a smaller space and discharges it into the intake manifold. Supercharging adds an average of 46% more horsepower and 31% more torque. Superchargers spin at speeds as high as 50,000 to 60,000 RPM. A compressor spinning at 50,000 RPM produces a boost of about 6 to 9 psi. (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/supercharger1.htm)…

A demigod by definition is neither a god nor a man rather they exist somewhere between the two strict realms. Unlike some heroes throughout ancient myths and histories, Hercules was born mortal yet became immortal. Born of a human but created from a god, Hercules is the epitome of obscurity. Throughout his life, the contrasts of god and human make him strong yet weak. As a man he can be controlled and enslaved by both humans and gods (Loraux 131). Yet, his god-like aptitude of extreme strength and immunity to suffering (in that he does not give in to it) Hercules thrives until he is granted immortality through resurrection (Lopez-Ruiz 273). Even within Greek art, there is some confusion about the nature of Hercules: god or man or somewhere…

This passage can be found in the beginning of The Odyssey in Book One, Lines 1-12. It’s significant not only because it’s how the epic begins, but also because it gives quick insight to Odysseus’ character and what happens on his way home. Odysseus is revealed to be a man “of twists and turns”(1) which gives the double meaning in the literal sense of his journey home and his cunning nature. In this case, The Odyssey follows the guideline of an epic as it states what the rest of the poem entails. The speaker asks a Muse to sing to him while he gets ready to tell the tale of Odysseus’ journey. He travels through “many cities”(4), suffers “many pains”(5), and it’s implied that he is the last of his crew to survive as the “recklessness of their own ways destroyed them all”(8). This shows that his perilous journey and hero-like features make him deserving of an epic. Also this opening foreshadows all that is to come later in the book with him trying to save his crew’s life from disaster, his crew being wiped out because of eating the cattle of the Sun, and Odysseus’ nearly impossible trip home. Another notable thing is that the Muse is allowed to “start from where [she] will”(12) and she does this throughout the epic by using flashbacks and swaps between the separate storylines of Telemachus and Odysseus.…

The School of Athens is a fresco by Raphael, commissioned by Pope Julius II during the High Renaissance. The fresco is in the Palace of the Vatican in a room called the Stanza della Segnatura. Originally a library at the beginning of the 16th century, this was a room for learning. Raphael rendered four frescoes, each representing one of the four branches of human knowledge: philosophy, theology, poetry and justice. Philosophy being considered part of the other areas of human thought, was significant. The School of Athens centered on the two great philosophers, Plato and Aristotle, with historical philosophers aligned on either associated side. The scene appears life-like, just as if they were walking while in conversation, however, the vanishing…
