The Transformations In She Stoops To Conquer
The transforming of Kate and Marlow, who become the couple finally, links all the plots in the play She Stoops To Conquer, also this play was praised highly in the 18th hundreds, part of the reason might be the splendid transformations between two main characters made by Oliver Goldsmith. As a successful laughing comedy, the transformation of Marlow contributes momentously, not only in the aspect of developing the story, and also attracting the readers. Moreover, the transformation of Kate models her a young lady that is being brave, attentive and self-sacrificing, and finally she wins Marlow’s love.
Marlow is born in a wealthy family in London City, he lives in a such upper-class condition. Compare to how well-educated, conversable, graceful and good-looking he is, it is very surprising that Marlow lacks the ability to communicate with young ladies. Thus the contrast of Marlow shows his dualism(Dualism in Marlow’s Character). Dualism means something consists of two opposing elements, and it emerges when Marlow talks to Miss Handcastle, who has an other name Kate. “ Pardon me, madam, I---I---I---as yet studied---only---to---deserve them.” when they are having a conversation about the ladies, Marlow is too nervous to speak smoothly. In addition, before Marlow talks to Miss Handcastle, he asks his friend, Hasting to help him finding Kate and telling her his love, “Hastings, you must not go. You are to assist me, you know. I shall be confoundedly ridiculous.” Back to 18th century, woman’s social status was much lower than man’s, Marlow’s attitude towards Kate clearly shows his timid of communicating with girls that in his class. According to Marlow’s thought to Kate, “And of all women, she that I dread most to encounter!” He is actually an escapist and always tries to escape from his in-confidence (Dualism in Marlow’s Character).
