The Truman Show is an American satirical comedy-drama film, released in 1998. The cast includes Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, a 29 year old insurance salesman whose life is broadcasted in a reality television show all across the world. From time to time he gets to find out the truth about his situation. The film got many nominations, like the Golden Globe or the Academy Award.
Truman Burbank lives in Seahaven, a calm town surrounded by the sea, which seems perfect, as the sky is beautifully blue and everyone especially friendly. However, there are hidden cameras all around the city, so that his whole life can be broadcast in the “Truman Show”, which is directed by Christof. Already before his birth he was adopted by the TV company and filmed in the womb of his mother. Seahaven is actually a complete set, built under a giant dome and populated by the show’s actors and crew, in order to control every aspect of Truman’s life. The show itself is completely financed by product placement.
Truman fears the water, because his father suffered a faked death during a stormy fishing trip, which prevents him from leaving Seahaven. Also, there are commercials about the fear of travelling and the advantages of staying at home.
One day, Truman starts getting suspicious when a spotlight, representing a star, falls onto the street from the sky and his car radio picks up conversations between the show’s crew. He also becomes aware of other strange things, such as exactly the same way people act every day, his wife Meryl making product placement, a back-stage scene behind an elevator or his father appearing on the set and suddenly disappearing.
In a flashback scene, one gets to know about Sylvia, known to Truman as Lauren, who tried to tell him the truth about his life, but was then quickly removed from the set. Despite being married, he is still in love with her and everything he knows about her is that she went to Fiji.
That’s why Truman seeks to get away
