The Two-Party System in the U.S.: Democrats and Republicans

The United States is a nation with a two-party system; a two-party system is a political system in which the electorate gives its votes largely to only two major parties and in which one or the other party can win a majority in the legislature. The two major parties in the United States are the Republicans and the Democrats. Each of these parties has strong beliefs on certain issues such as abortion, gay marriage, and immigration. Democrats take a liberal approach, while Republicans take a conservative approach. A typical Democrat generally believes in a larger federal government, whereas a typical Republican does not believe in this concept. Democrats generally believe in more government involvement regulation in businesses and citizens; they believe that the government should look towards the greater good for the welfare of the people. Republicans have a different believe about how the government should be involved and how the country should be run. Republicans hold economic equity on top of any other thing. They believe that all answers lay with the people rather than with the government. Republicans strongly believe that the government should have less control over individual lives, and unlike the Democrats they strongly believe in property rights rather than believing in welfare rights. For instance, Democrats support government entitlement programs such as Social Security and health care, and Republicans would prefer to outsource these government entitlement programs to the private sector.
