International Court of Justice (ICJ)
Principal judicial organ of the United Nations. Its seat is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands).
Functions to settle in accordance with international law the legal disputes between countries
Issues must be jointly submitted to it by both States in order for a ruling to be binding
May give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized international organs and agencies.
Security Council (SC)
Membership is 15 countries represented from the regions of the world
5 countries have veto power; USA, UK, France, Russia, and China
Primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.
Only UN body that can use force; economic and/or military
What is does with threats to peace
Recommends the parties try to reach an agreement by peaceful means. undertakes investigation and mediation through special representatives or request the Secretary-General to do so
Sets forth principles for a peaceful settlement.
Issues cease-fire directives which have been instrumental in preventing wider hostilities.
Commissions United Nations peace-keeping forces to help reduce tensions in troubled areas, keep opposing forces apart, and create conditions of calm in which peaceful settlements may be sought.

General Assembly (GA)
Membership: All Member States with each state having one vote. Non-governmental organizations (NGO’s such as UNICEF) are observers. the “main deliberative organ.” It is basically the place where everybody discusses current issues going on in the world today
