All eyes are on America and an adept workforce has never been in higher demand. If more Americans had a college education on their check list we’d see our workforce become more pragmatic and ambitious. The benefit of an adept workforce would overflow into our communities increasing the members of society who will become actively engaged on an intellectual level.
The smarter our technology gets the tougher the competition for competent workers will be. Zimmer informs us that, “College provides young adults with the intellectual capital to succeed and the social capital to help the make connections, build networks, and establish life-long relationships.” A higher education supplies the tools to win the competition.
Our workforce will make smarter decisions if it has more educated workers. This momentum will flow into our communities and create a more proactive society. Perry explains that, “Higher education allows people of all backgrounds to hone their writing, reading, cognitive, and critical thinking skills that enable them to actively participate as citizens.”(671-2). The more confident a person is in their ability the more likely it is they will be heard.
Change is inevitable and workers will be required to adapt quickly to an ever-changing work environment. Miller reminds us that, “We have to hop from job to without loss of momentum as we acquire new skills and knowledge.”(673-4). A higher education challenges students in multiple disciplines lessening the effect of vertigo caused by change.
In America we can only expect the demands to become more demanding and the competition to get more competitive. Those with a college education enjoy their pick of the crop in the workforce and find it easier to be proactive in their communities. An increase in Americans armed with a higher education would create a workforce that is more pragmatic and ambitious in a time that has never needed it more.
