The Vancouver Seawall
Today, the Vancouver Seawall is visited daily by many people. This seawall, constructed around Vancouver’s Stanley Park, is a perfect place to bike, walk a dog, or jog. Stanley Park and the Vancouver Seawall are considered to be the most popular recreational point in Vancouver. Vancouver’s Seawall is not only for recreational purposes, it also stops the water from the Vancouver Harbour from eroding Stanley Park’s shores. Without the seawall, erosion could cause damage to the perimeter of Stanley Park. People argued that the waves from passing ships eroded areas in the park, so a proposal was sent to the federal government to ask for funding to build the seawall. The federal government helped fund the project until the area’s most vulnerable

If we add buffer zones it can stop eutrophication which has already created dead zones in the Chesapeake Bay. Dead zones are areas in the bay that have no oxygen and can’t support life. Also, buffer zones also anchor soil to the ground which prevents sediment pollution that can block sunlight killing hundreds of plants and animals. The Blue Ridge Parkway didn’t just happen over night. It took fifty-two years to complete. The Parkway was inspired by the Skyline Drive, which is similar to the Parkway. President Franklin Roosevelt took a look and he agreed to start building what is now called the Blue Ridge Parkway. It took much more than the President’s approval; the constructors had to figure out where to put the Parkway. North Carolina, Virgina, and Tennessee had discussed many routes, but finally after re-examining, they decided to locate the parkway through North Carolina and Virginia. Now construction could begin. A planning team was assigned by the governors of North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee to layout a design. Secretary of the Interior, Harold Ickes, approved the plan to build a new ‘Park-to-Park Highway’. He gave four million dollars to start construction and hired a skilled architect to lead the plan. On September 11th, 1935 construction began here, in North Carolina and the following February, work began in Virgina.…

More than a year after the disaster and the implementation of a commission form of government, a committee under the new government was put in place to bring in engineers to plan protection for the city against storms.1 The committee appointed a board of engineers that included General H. M. Robert, Alfred Noble, and H. C. Ripley, and they were instructed to develop the safest and most efficient ways of protecting the city, raising the city’s grade, and developing a seawall to prevent overflow in case of a storm.2 The engineers soon got a report to present to the public. In the report they pointed out original grading surveys showing that the highest point on the island was 8.9 feet and the average was 5.8 feet and going as low as 3.7 feet.3 The Board then proposed a 3 mile long solid concrete wall as tall as 17 feet, 1.3 feet taller than the highest point of flooding reached by the storm of 1900. The Board also proposed the raising of the city grade.4 The three engineers calculated the cost at $1,294,755 for the seawall and $2,210,285 for the grade raising; the…
