The Virginia Tech Massacre: An Absolute Disaster

The Virginia Tech massacre was an absolute disaster and could have been avoided if people actually did their jobs and what they were supposed to do leading up to and before the shootings began. Cho was spiraling well before the events and had he been reported to the police he never would have gotten his hands on two guns and all that ammunition. The Virginia Tech staff also dropped the ball because once they found the chained doors with the note that said there was a bomb, the person went up to the third floor to speak to a supervisor instead of just calling the police like they were supposed to. One if I saw chained doors and a note saying don’t leave or a bomb will go off I would immediately call the police. Then I would hop out of a window.
Also what was that one girl thinking climbing in through a window to get in? Class is important but it’s not that important unless it was a midterm or final. Other problems that occurred on the day was that Virginia Tech didn’t have an adequate emergency messaging system to alert students what was going on. Something that really struck me and was commented on in the key findings was after Cho shot that girl that lived on the same floor as him the police focused in on finding the boyfriend instead of looking for other potential suspects. The panel said that the police acted as they should have but said they should focus on just one theory. In the multiple criminal justice classes I have taken that is something that you do not do because it can cost people their lives. After Virginia Tech happened we are now living in a mindset of active shooters. When I was in high school every two months we would do an active shooter drill where we would all get up against the wall of the classroom turn off our phones and just be quiet for 15 minutes. The review panel’s decisions can still be felt today, Virginia Tech didn’t have a good emergency response system to warn students. I remember when the machete gun incident happened a couple weeks ago Rutgers texted and emailed me to stay away from that area. It sad that we live in this type of world an mentality of active shooters but, it’s important to be aware of them and how to react for everyone.
