The Wage Gap between Men and Women The ongoing problem women face in society is being victim of the wage gap in jobs where they hold the same or greater positions as men. Things like the Equal Pay Act were designed to rid society of the inequalities in the work place. Women are continuing to be paid less than men in jobs where they hold equal prestige. I find the neglect of the situation to be quite disturbing. We have come so far as a society with women equality, allowing a wage gap to continue just negates the progress we have worked so hard to achieve. I would like to see stricter guidelines regarding the wage gap between women and men. I feel that the Equal Pay Act should be rewritten with rules that are more enforced on a larger scale. Women are just as capable as men, therefore they should be paid equally. The wage gap between women and men may vary by career choices. In Jenny C. McCune’s article on “Bridging the Pay Gap Between Genders” she expresses her views on the wage gap and how the war is far from over for women looking to make equal pay as men. She suggests that, “Maybe the battle was won, but not the war. The wage war, that is. Even though federal laws protect women against discrimination, a pay gap persists” (1). The Equal Pay Act was signed in 1963 and was designed to put a stop to the wage gap between men and women, but unfortunately the wage gap still exists today. She also states that, “The BLS released figures last year from 2004 -- the most recent year for which statistics are available -- showing that women 's median weekly earnings were 80 percent that of men” (1). I am inferring that the Equal Pay Act was placed to set a boundaries for the wage gap, but this act has not set strict enough guidelines because the gap still exists in many jobs today. I am inferring that women and men should be seen as equal with everything they do, It should not be selective in the work place. When women and men pursue the same profession
